Joan F. Durante Obituary



Joan was born in Colfax, WA at St. Ignatius Hospital where her grandfather was the attending physician. Joan was raised by her parents Dell and Edith Mitchell in Steptoe, WA and was the middle child with an older brother Bill Mitchell and a younger brother David Mitchell. Joan attended Steptoe School in the first through 12th grades in the same building. After graduations, Joan moved to Spokane and worked at the Desert Oasis Restaurant in the Desert Hotel where she met the love of her life when he came into the restaurant and ordered a milkshake. It was love at first sight with Sam and they were married a year later. They were married 72 ½ years and had four children.    

Joan was preceded in death by her youngest daughter (Sylvia Durante), her husband (Sam Durante), her brothers (Bill & David Mitchell), her parents (Dell & Edith Mitchell), and her son-in-law (Jock Swanstrom). Joan is survived by daughter Eileen (Jock) Swanstrom, son Steve Durante, and daughter Cynthia (Cliff) Erickson. Joan and Sam have 7 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. 

A celebration of Joan’s life will be held on Friday, August 19, 2022 at 11:00am at Hennessey Funeral Home at 2203 N. Division, Spokane followed by a reception. Entombment will be at Fairmount Memorial Park. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, that donations be made in Joan’s honor to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Inland Northwest
