Dr. Mark Steven Schorr Obituary

Dr. Mark Steven Schorr, 64 years old of Chattanooga, Tennessee, passed away on the 10th of August, 2022. He was born on the 24th of July, 1958, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is the son of Robert A. Schorr and Marilyn Gremillion Martin. He was a loving and dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. Mark was a passionate and accomplished researcher and teacher during his 28 years at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga. He made friends easily throughout his life, from his friends in Louisiana to the Whole Foods and YMCA’s here in Chattanooga.

Being a father, grandfather, and husband was something Mark took great pride in. As his children were growing up, he was extremely passionate about their soccer games, track meets, and band recitals. He was very proud to be a grandfather as well. He loved his wife of 38 years so much, and built a beautiful life with her. Mark loved movies, especially Clint Eastwood westerns. The New Orleans Saints became a team when he was eight years old, and Mark grew up a massive fan. He was extremely proud of them when they finally won a Super Bowl in 2009. Mark shared his love of football and movies with his children. Raised a Catholic, Mark loved God, and he was always moved by how beautiful the churches were in New Orleans as well as here in Chattanooga. Mark accepted a job at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga in 1994, and he and his wife, Holly Williams Schorr, moved to Chattanooga with their two children. His teaching and research were focused on stream fish ecology, with an emphasis on water pollution issues and population/community ecology. He was an integral part of stream restoration efforts in the area. The many professional and personal relationships he fostered in this area were of great importance to him. He loved taking his students out on the Tennessee River, and the many creeks and streams of this area for his lab sections. Seeing graduate students excel in their own research and careers was something that brought great joy to him.

Mark is survived by his wife of 38 years, Holly Williams Schorr, and their three children, Heather Autrey, Lauren Schorr, and Robert Schorr, 2 grandchildren, Benjamin and Austin Autrey, his three sisters, Kathy Schorr, Suzi Spear, Dayna Schorr, and his mother, Marilyn Gremillion Martin.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, August 20, 2022 at 1:00 PM in the Patten Chapel of UTC.
