Ruth Henderson Obituary


Ruth Henderson, 99, the last original resident of Lynnhaven Court, passed away on August 22, 2022, in the tender care of Community Hospice and Woodland Oaks Healthcare. She was born on August 15, 1923, in Worthington, Kentucky, the firstborn child of Pansy Hatfield Cox and Lee Cox.

She attended the University of Kentucky, graduating with a degree in home economics in 1947, where she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. She worked for Ashland Oil, where she met the great love of her life, Bruce Henderson, whom she married in 1948. She and Bruce were married for 62 years. She also taught school and worked for Columbia Gas as a home economist. After the birth of their son, she became a homemaker.

In 1973, she quit smoking and took up tennis, which she played every week until 2010. She volunteered at Ashland Meals on Wheels for over 20 years. She loved the beach, especially Sanibel Island, and had a fabulous collection of sea shells. She and Bruce traveled the world after his retirement. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Ashland.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was pre-deceased by her brother Lee Cox, Jr., a Naval radioman who died in a plane crash near the end of WWII.

She is survived by her son, Mark (Tiffany) and grandchildren Molly, Sean, Ryan (Alexa), Liam, and Rhys. She is also survived by her youngest brother Danny Cox (Laverne), and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on August 28, 2022, 4:00 PM, at Ashland Cemetery. Memorial donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to Community Hospice.
