James David Layman Obituary

It is with great sadness the family of Dr. James David Layman announces his passing on July 6, 2024, at the age of 80.  James was known for his gentle spirit, service to God and country, devotion to family, love of learning, and dedication to health and fitness.

He graduated from Crocker High School in 1961, followed by earning his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy of Religion from Howard Payne (TX) College in 1965, Master of Divinity in 1971, and Doctor of Ministry in 1984, both from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

James was senior pastor at Maywood Community Church in Kansas City, Kansas, and First Baptist Church in Gallatin, Missouri, prior to moving to Kirkwood in 1982.

He was a chaplain at Missouri Baptist Medical Center from 1982 until his retirement in 2010.

In addition, he proudly served in the Missouri National Guard and the United States Army Reserves for 23 years, retiring from the USAR as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1998.  James started his own tax preparation service that he ran out of his house from 2002 until his passing.

James was very involved with his congregation at Kirkwood Baptist Church and truly enjoyed the fellowship of his faith family. He loved spending time with his family and cherished every moment with his grandchildren, to whom he was ‘Papa’ and was their biggest fan at games, concerts and ceremonies. James was compassionate about the environment and service to his community.

He is survived by his loving wife Judy (Pemberton) of 58 years, daughter Amy Christensen (Eric), son Kent (Lissy), grandchildren Abby (Elena), Macy, Carter and Reese, brothers Leon (Linda), Roger (Teresa), Ronnie (Betty), Darrell (Sherry), and friend to many.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Pansy Layman.

Visitation will be held on July 12, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Bopp Chapel, Kirkwood, Missouri.  A service will follow on July 13, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Kirkwood Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Dr. James Layman can be made to Kirkwood Baptist Church, 211 North Woodlawn Ave. Kirkwood, Missouri.
