DR. DAN W. COLLINS Obituary

Dr. Dan W. Collins, 76, of Negaunee, entered eternal life Saturday afternoon, July 6, 2024 in the company of family while at UP Health System Marquette.

Dan was born July 21, 1947 in Ishpeming to George and Helen (Jensen) Collins and graduated from Negaunee High School, Class of 1965. He married Fae Holman in March of 1968 and earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Northern Michigan University in 1969. He was hired as a middle school science teacher and also as a Community School Director in Flint, MI. In 1970 Dan, Fae and Kaet moved to White Pine, MI where he served as the Community School Director and teacher for White Pine & Ewen-Trout Creek school districts. In 1972, Dan entered dental school at the University of Michigan, graduating with honors in 1976, and was a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the national dental honor society.

Dr. Collins returned home to practice dentistry in Ishpeming, joining his father-in-law, Dr. Stanley Holman, in his dental practice. In 1984, Dan and his partners moved the practice to Negaunee where he continued to serve the area as a family dentist until he retired in 2016. Dan lived his faith and was a devout member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Over the decades, he served on the church council, the building committee, and as a Sunday school teacher. He regularly participated as a communion server, usher, and lector in the church. In his civic life, Dan was a member of the Negaunee Male Chorus, served on the Bank Board of the First National Bank of Negaunee, and was a member of the Negaunee Rod and Gun Club.

Dan loved his family, helping others, telling stories, having a good in-depth discussion and spending time out-of-doors. He and Fae included their children in these passions and they each have pursued them in their own ways. Every morning before school Dan would remind each of his children, “Work hard, learn lots, and help others;” this is how he approached life. He loved giving and getting a good bear hug, and believed that they had healing powers. Dan was always quick to offer help, share a bit of wisdom, undertake a project, spend time at camp, and plan his next hunting or fishing adventure. His intense belief that his wife and children could, “Accomplish anything they set their mind to,” provided the fuel for each to believe it, too. For the many patients who sat in his operatory chair, they were not just in the expert hands of an excellent dentist, but also in the company of a man who cared deeply for those in the community and their well-being.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Fae (Holman) Collins; three daughters: Kaet (Dave) Johnson of Chocolay Township, Anne Collins of Negaunee, and Jill (Jason) Hamlin of Ishpeming; one son, Ben (Jim) Collins of Negaunee; seven grandchildren: David (Ashley), Christopher, Gillian and Gunnar Johnson, and Astrid, Simon and Ingrid Hamlin; three great-grandchildren: Mackenzie, Kaidance and Duncan Johnson; special loved one, Nadya (Greg) Long and their children, Anna, Nikolas and Katya Long; four sisters-in-law: Jonelle Collins, Janice Collins, Susan Thomas and Gail (John) Blanck; brother-in-law, Scott (Martine) Holman; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Helen (Jensen) Collins; two brothers, George and Bruce Collins; in-laws Stanley and Lillian (Lutey) Holman; and his brother-in- law, Jim Thomas.

Memorial services will be held at 12:00 PM on Friday, July 19th at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Negaunee with Pastor Bre Kinnunen officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends from 10:00 am until the time of services at 12:00 PM at the church on Friday. A luncheon will follow in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed in Dr. Dan Collins’ memory to Immanuel Lutheran Church or Fortune Lake Bible Camp.
