Forrest Lee Whitley Obituary

Forrest Lee Whitley, Jr. of Griffin, GA passed away on July 6, 2024, following a period of declining health. Lee was the son of the late Forrest Lee Whitley, Sr. and the late Lillian Mozelle Cannon Whitley. Lee remembered “Miss Mozelle” fondly in her obituary just after her 100th birthday in 2012. Lee shared his mother’s love of the theater, music and other arts.

Lee was born on April 8, 1944 in Atlanta, GA and grew up in Griffin, GA, where he was a member of First Baptist Church. He graduated from Griffin High School in 1962 and received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Georgia. Following graduate school, Lee was commissioned as an officer in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He served from 1969 through 1971 and left the service as a Captain.

Lee is survived by several cousins and many friends from his early Griffin and university days as well as his life in New York.

Lee pursued a career as an advertising executive for Manufacturer’s Hanover Bank in New York City and enjoyed life in the city for most of his adult life. He was a patron of the arts there and was a member of Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue, where he served as guide coordinator and lecturer for tours of the historic church’s elegant sanctuary, with its remarkable stained-glass windows and sculptures. After his mother’s death, Lee retired and returned to Griffin, where he continued his love of the arts as a member of the Board of Directors of Griffin Choral Arts. He was a frequent visitor to his home church, First Baptist, as well as St. George’s Episcopal Church in Griffin, where he renewed old friendships and made new friends with his engaging manner.

A funeral and remembrance service will be held at graveside in Oak Hill Cemetery at noon on Wednesday, July 10th. Visitation will also be at graveside from 11:00 AM until noon. Reverend Dr. Ron Murray will officiate.

Conner-Westbury Funeral Home in Griffin, GA is in charge of arrangements. Please join Lee’s family and friends in honoring his distinguished life by visiting           www.conner-westburyfuneralhome.com to post your tributes and memories.
