Edna E. Carter

“A life well lived and immeasurable

legacy of service and love.”

Edna E. Carter was born on September 9, 1931, in Lambert, Mississippi, to the late Jeffery Peterson and Mary Rodgis. Edna met the late Earnest Carter in Detroit, MI, where they were united in Holy Matrimony on June 12th, 1950. After having three children, they moved to Columbus, Ohio, where they had two more children to become a family of seven.

Edna joined Mt. Vernon AME Church, faithfully serving in the Lay Organization, Women’s Missionary Society, So-Re-Lit Club, Culinary Arts Ministry, Food Pantry, Usher Board, Stewardess Board, and Pictorial Directory Committee. She loved Jesus, the Church, and her family and friends. She was a fierce, kind, strong-will, and occasionally sharp-tongued lady whose presence commanded respect anywhere she went.  She welcomed everyone she met with open arms, and they immediately became her family.  To know her was to love her and know that you were loved by her.  One of her callings in life was creating a sense of family, and for that, she did a job well done for ninety-two years. After a long and full life, she was called home to glory on Saturday, July 7th, 2024.

Edna is preceded in death by her late husband, Earnest Carter, and her son, Dwight Carter. She leaves to cherish her memories, her four surviving children, Ernest “Larry” Carter, Valerie (Ronald) McCall, Sandy (Robert) Eubanks, and Gregory (Cheryl) Carter; brother -in-law, Dan and Nonnie Carter Jr., daughter in law, Charmel Carter. Her greatest joy was being a loving and sweet grandmother to 14 grandchildren including the late Tina Carter, Ernest Carter, LaShaun (Cheree) Carter, Lee (Lynn) Hayden, Rhonda Miller, Nikki Burton, Dwight (Samantha) Carter, Dwayne (Tammy) Carter, Robert (Johari) Eubanks, David Eubanks, Regina Eubanks, Rhea Eubanks, Robert Carter, and Taylor (Brian) Carter-Mayes.

Edna was also blessed to be a great-grandmother to 30 great-grandchildren, including Jasmine Carter, Terrell (Dionna) Carter, Rico Spriggs, Zaria Carter, Chyna Carter, LaDaia Carter, LaShad Carter, Allante Miller, Mark Austin Jr., Kierra Miller, Mikaila Jackson, DeJau Carter, Dwayne “Duece” Carter, Danielle Carter, Malcolm Marshall, Gabrielle Carter, Jade Burton, Jaylen Burton, Gerald Burton, Robert Eubanks III, Jean Eubanks, Julia Eubanks, Armani Eubanks, Stuart Sumpter, Robert Carter Jr., Rozlyn Carter, Mariah Carter, Mason Carter, Carter Mayes, and Lincoln Mayes.

Edna lived a long and beautiful life and had 17 great-great-grandchildren: Serenity Carter, Sa’Vion Carter, Saniya Fayne, Harlem Fayne, Journi Fayne, Autumn Carter, Phoenix Carter, Kaiden Austin, Reagan Austin, Alexiana Willoughbhy, Aniyah Martin, Mason Marshall, Evan Marshall, Honor Eubanks Moore, Se’Kani Eubanks Moore, Jaxson Burton, and Jaiden Winborn.

Edna was a devoted godmother to Monica Williams and Terrance Williams, whom she loved dearly. She also loved and was loved by close cousins and family friends, including Alberta Wright, Katie Mae (Wiley) Williams, James Whatley, Jean Whatley, Jackie Pearence, Vanessa Lewter, LaDonna Liggins, May Kay Liggins, Charlotte Favors, and Karen Glover, and many others. She was preceded in death by her close friends, including Fledia Carpenter, Vernette Jeter, Helen Eubanks, Nancy Brown, Helen Smith, Peggy Fulham, and Norma Tinsley.
