Eleanor Patterson Obituary

It is with great sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Eleanor Patterson - loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend – on Saturday, July 6, 2024, surrounded by her family, at the Northside Community Guest Home, at the age of 92.

Born in Sydney Mines on March 2, 1932, Eleanor was the daughter of the late William and Margaret (Bonnar) Ferguson. Eleanor was a proud teacher with a 35-year career teaching in Florence, Fairview, and Seton elementary schools. She enjoyed cooking and especially baking but her true passion was her poetry, which she released in a volume that she shared with countless family members and friends and the community.

Eleanor is survived by her husband Fred, with whom she would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in two weeks’ time. She is further survived by her children: Nancy (Donnie) White and Glenn (Mia) Patterson; grandchildren: Kevin (Amy) White, Curtis (Sharon) White, Thomas (Jenene) White, Kyle Patterson (Paige), Travis Patterson, and Olivia Patterson (David); great-grandchildren: Madison, Ian, Adelaide, Cecilia, Alice, and Mya White, along with Lincoln and Lylah Patterson. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Martha “Mattie” Ferguson and Mariam Ferguson, many nieces and one nephew.

Besides her parents, Eleanor was predeceased by her siblings: Jacob “Buddy” Ferguson, Mae (David) Dowling, and Billy Ferguson. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Northside Guest Home for their excellent care.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages that donations be made to a charity of one’s choice.

A visitation for Eleanor will be held from 1-3 pm on Thursday, July 11, at the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home at 107 Pleasant St. North Sydney, with a funeral service immediately following at 3 pm in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Stephen Mills officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeside cemetery. A reception will follow the service at the Pensioners Club at 309 Commercial St. in North Sydney. Online condolences can be left for the family by writing on the tribute wall of the obituary page at www.wjdooley.com.
