Lorena Burton Obituary

Lorena Burton, age 88, of Hicksville, Ohio, passed away at Vancrest Health Care Center on July 6th, 2024. She was born in Menifee County, Kentucky on March 2, 1936. Lorena was the last remaining of nine children born to Theodore Roosevelt and Virginia McPherson. She was an honor student in high school and had a hunger for learning. After school she took a position at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base where she was a Military Personnel Clerk Specialist. It was here she met and soon married William Burton, her husband of 61 years. The Burton’s lived in Rockford, Illinois and Costa Mesa, California before settling in Spencerville, Indiana with their two girls, June and Valerie. Lorena enjoyed teaching children remedial math at Riverdale Elementary. She also spent her life being an active member and volunteer at her church and in her community, this even led to several years being sheriff at her local voting precinct. She loved cooking, gardening, sewing, reading and had a passion for letter writing. Lorena’s love for Christ gave her a heart to care for others. This was easily seen on display when she visited shut-ins and spent time being a comfort to those in nursing homes. However, Lorena’s greatest accomplishment and joy was being a wife, a mother and Grandma Rena to her grandchildren.

Lorena will be well remembered by those who knew her as a strong spirited but loving woman. She is survived by her daughters June (Larry) Vollmer and Valerie (Keith) Malcolm and six grandchildren; Justin, Hannah and Jonah Vollmer and Caleb (Natali and baby on the way), Seth (Katie), and Joshua (Gloria) Perkins.

Funeral services will be held at Hicksville Church of Christ Friday, July 12, 2024, at 11:00am. There will be an hour calling before services. Burial services will follow at Hicksville Union Cemetery. Memorials can be made in Lorena’s name to Heartland Hospice of Whitehouse, Ohio or charity of choice.
