Freeda ViAnn Buford, age 96, passed away on July 5, 2024, in Fort Smith, Arkansas. She was born on February 24, 1928, in Mansfield, Arkansas, to Ted and Ethel (Nolen) Buford.
Freeda displayed a spirited determination from a young age, once embarking alone on a train at the age of 8 from Mansfield to Tulsa, Oklahoma, eager to pursue an “acting career”. Thankfully, a caring adult intercepted her journey and safely reunited her with her family.
She attended Mansfield Public Schools and later worked for several years in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Freeda’s life took an unexpected turn when a vacation to Washington, D.C. became a 41-year stay. During this time, she worked at the University of Maryland for 9 years and subsequently at the Music Educators National Conference for 31 years until her retirement in 1992.
In May 1993, Freeda returned to her roots in Arkansas, purchasing her first home in Fort Smith. She was a devout member of East Side Baptist Church. She loved to entertain and cook for her family and friends, finding joy in preparing meals and creating a warm, inviting atmosphere for gatherings.
Freeda is survived by her cousins: Ron & Emily Evans and their son, Stephen and Linda Hansson, all of Fort Smith; and Ed and Sheri Nasca, of North Carolina. She also leaves behind cherished friends, Mark and Christy Anders, and their children Taylor and his wife Laura Megan and their sons, Huck and Lane; Tucker and his wife Shelbi; and Sydney Anders.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ted and Ethel Buford, and her brother, Phillip Buford.
