Nancy Mahrer Obituary

With extreme sadness, we announce the unexpected passing of Nancy LaRae Brown Mahrer on July 6, 2024.

Nancy was born August 4, 1949, in McCook, Nebraska, to Don Brown and Lois Brown (Guinn). The second of eight siblings, Nancy grew up in Oberlin, Kansas, graduating from Decatur Community Senior High School in 1967.

After graduation, she headed west to San Francisco to work for SFO Airlines as a reservations agent. There, she met a nice Navy man in the apartment complex named Al Mahrer. A year and a half later, in September 1969, they were married in Al’s hometown of Park River, North Dakota.

In their nearly fifty-five years of marriage, Al and Nancy had three children: April Merritt (Jim), Amber Pirillo (Ben), and Justin Mahrer (Missy). Nancy considered each of her six grandchildren a blessing and a source of joy.

Nancy and Al stayed in North Dakota while Al finished college, then moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where she worked as a medical assistant. Nancy excelled at providing her children with a supportive and nurturing household to grow up in, establishing traditions they continue today. After many years of vacationing at the Lake of the Ozarks, Nancy and Al bought their lake house and retired to Camdenton, MO, in 2004.

A lifetime reader, Nancy was happiest floating on the water, under the summer sun, with a beer in one hand and a book in the other. When she wasn’t connecting with her family and friends, Nancy made time to volunteer in her community.

She will be remembered as a vibrant, passionate, and spiritual woman who always had kind words and a smile for a stranger.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 20th, at 2:00 p.m. at Faithbridge Church in Osage Beach, Missouri. Additional details can be found at nancymahrer.com
