Elizabeth A. Heaney Obituary

Elizabeth A. Heaney (nee Hill) beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, friend, passed away peacefully with family at her side on July 6, 2024 at the age of 86. Affectionately known as Liz, she was born in New York City to Ross and Marian (nee Edwards) Hill on April 1, 1938. She was raised in Hempstead, NY, on Long Island, and it was in her 17th year that she met her soulmate and future husband Robert, known as Bob, in 12th grade English class. She graduated from Mary Washington College with a degree in Psychology in 1960. She and Bob married later that summer and she had a brief teaching career. They were blessed with 3 children; Liz was an energetic and devoted mother famous for family trips to Jones Beach complete with picnic fixings, volunteerism at her children’s school, and festive holiday celebrations. They raised their family on Long Island until 1973 when a career move for Bob transferred the family to Johannesburg, South Africa. It would be a life-changing 2 years for the entire family. Travel throughout southern Africa, the Far East and Europe, enthusiastically organized by Liz, provided rich memories for all. Following that assignment, Bob was transferred to Toronto, Canada for another year of overseas living, and it was there that the family all learned to ski together, a lifelong family-favorite hobby. The family returned to Oradell, NJ in 1976 where Liz supported her children in their many school and sporting events. Bob and Liz went on to enjoy living in Wilmington, DE, Park City, UT, Point Pleasant Beach, NJ, St. Mary’s, GA, Charlotte, NC, and finally Barnegat, NJ.

Liz, a lifelong Yankees fan, enjoyed many hobbies in her long life, including skiing, gardening, reading, horseback riding, traveling and watching sporting events on TV, but her most favorite past time was spending time with family. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, and was blessed with 2 great grandchildren. She will always be remembered as a smart, kind, generous and friendly lady, and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was predeceased by her parents, and her sister Ethel Hill. She is survived by her loving husband of nearly 64 years, Robert, devoted children Theresa Galla (Jan), Robert Jr. (Catherine) and Michael (Patricia), adored grandchildren Michael Heaney, Jr. (Shannon), Robert Heaney III (Gabrielle), Kristin Ortolf (Connor), John Galla, Kevin Heaney (fiancée Hannah Fasano), James Heaney (Caitlin), Madeline Tullo (Dominick) and Joseph Galla, and beloved great-grandchildren PJ Ortolf and Emma Heaney. Her devotion to family, faith and friendship will be long remembered.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 11, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Barnegat Funeral Home, 841 West Bay Ave. Mass of Christian Burial offered 12:30 PM at St. Mary's Church, Barnegat. Interment to follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Manahawkin. (www.BarnegatFH.com)

In lieu of flowers, and in the generous and giving spirit that defined Liz, donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital would be greatly appreciated.
