Irene "Ekka" Balko Obituary

Balko, Irene “Ekka”, age 82, of Hawthorne, on Saturday, July 6, 2024. 


Born in Toningen, Germany, Irene immigrated to the U.S. in 1956 settling in Paterson, later she became a resident of Hawthorne for over 50 years. A knack for mathematics, Irene had retired as an optical engineer from the Kearfott Corporation in Wayne and had been a dedicated member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of the Incarnation for 65 years. She had happily served as the Ladies Guild Treasurer at the Church and enjoyed reading in her spare time. She had a passion for fashion and enjoyed shopping for clothes, jewelry, accessories, and making an appearance in style and bling. 


Irene worked hard and was proud of her empire, her beloved family. She was the dear wife of Ditmar Balko for 65 years. Mother of Ditmar Robert Balko, Jr. and his wife Frances of Spring Valley, CA, Angelica Parish and her husband Walter of Sebastian, FL, David Balko of Manahawkin, Sandra Evans and her husband Charles of West Creek, and Lisa E. Danyus and her husband Jeffrey of Oak Ridge. Grandmother of Christopher, Shannan, Michael, Katie, Nicole, Rachel, Madelyn, Jessica, Carlie, Jeffrey, Jr., Alexis, and Joshua. Great grandmother of Logan, Bodie, McKenzie, Colton, Dillon, Kynslee, Aaron, and Rylee. Loving sister of Annedore Parastschenko and her late husband Nicholas. Predeceased by her sister Hildegard Ryll and her brother George Ryll. She is also survived by several dear nieces and nephews. 


A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 12, 2024, at 11:00am, meeting at St. Paul Lutheran Church of the Incarnation, 220 Hamburg Turnpike, Pompton Lakes, NJ. Cremation will take place privately. Friends may visit with the family at the Browning-Forshay Funeral Home, 557 Lafayette Avenue, Hawthorne, on Thursday, from 3:00 – 7:00pm. 


In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church of the Incarnation.
