It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend Beatrice Schick. Beatrice was born on April 2, 1933 on the family farm in the Brewer, SK, district to Joe and Margaret Schwitzer. She was the oldest daughter of their seven children.
Beatrice met Ed Schick while he played in her brother Ray’s band. After dating for two years, they began their 53-year marriage on October 21, 1952. Throughout those years, Ed and Bea were blessed with 9 healthy children, 4 boys and 5 girls, which in return gave her 57 grandchildren and 48 great- grandchildren, whom she treasured dearly, and one foster child, Terry Eagle, for whom she cared for over 35 years.
In her early adult years, Bea worked as a waitress at the Cameo in Melville until they moved to Moose Jaw and later Lorlie, where Ed worked at the service station. In 1960 they moved to the farm ...Schick's Barn... where together they farmed, ran a dairy and held the barn dances. In 1988, Beatrice opened her approved home where she fostered young adults with intellectual disabilities. Throughout those years, she fostered several individuals, many of whom eventually moved on to live on their own.
On March 27, 2004, Ed and Bea moved to Melville where they purchased a home at 12 Jubilee Crescent to spend their retirement years. While in town, Beatrice busied herself in her garden and yard keeping it immaculately-groomed and manicured, as well as ensuring the neighbourhood birds were well fed. Her door was always open to company and the coffee pot and dainties always at the ready.
Beatrice was admitted to St. Peter’s Hospital on March 12, then moved to St. Paul Lutheran Home in April, where she lived until her passing.
Beatrice was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Ed; her parents, Joe and Margaret Schwitzer; her grandson, Trevor; her brothers, Raymond and Ralph; sister Violet; brothers-in-law Stan Maga, Alex Bohay and Gordon Jacobson; sister-in-law Loretta Schwitzer; father-in-law Ferdinand Schick and mother-in-law Katherine Schick; brothers-in-law Ferdinand, Willy, Gordon, Alvin, John, Norman, Adolf, George Schick, and Clarence Rathgeber; sisters-in-law Ella, Hilda, Evelyn, Alma and Iris; and niece Katherine.
Beatrice leaves to mourn: four sons, all of Melville, Aldon (Carol), Garnet (Gwen), Kevin (Kim) and Darren (Donna); five daughters, Mavis (Dave) Armstrong of Kipling, Carmie (Leon) Lazurko of Wynyard, Bonnie (Wayne) Truman of Regina, Nancy (Rick) Ward and Candace Schick of Saskatoon; one foster child, Terry Eagle; 57 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren; brother Allan Schwitzer; sisters Helen Maga and Rosemarie Jacobson; sisters-in-law Erma Schwitzer, Mary Schick and Mavis Rathgeber; Godchildren Bradley Schwitzer, Craig Rathgeber, Cindy Schick, Doug Schick, and Joanne Della-Veccia; as well as several nieces and nephews.
