Henry M. McDermott, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2024, in Danvers, Massachusetts, after a period of declining health. Born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, on March 9, 1945, to the late Henry and Mary McDermott, Henry lived a life marked by dedication to his family, his work, and his community.
A true family man, Henry was the beloved husband of Marsha McDermott, with whom he shared 59 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they built a life filled with joy, laughter, and treasured memories. Henry's legacy lives on through his two sons, Michael McDermott and his wife Brenda, and Jeffrey McDermott and his wife Deborah. He took immense pride in his six grandchildren—Michael, Melissa, Dillon, Darren, Jameson, and Trevor—and his great-grandson, Jonathan. Henry is also survived by his brother, Mark McDermott, his brother and sister-in-law, Chuck and Pat Clement, and many nieces and nephews who will miss his guiding presence. He was predeceased by his sister, Marlene McDermott, sister-in-law Diane McDermott, and sister-in-law Carol Ford.
A graduate of Danvers High School, Class of '63, Henry furthered his education at Wentworth Institute of Technology, where he earned an Electrical Certificate. His professional life was marked by a successful career in the propane industry, where he retired as Vice President of Eastern Propane Gas in Danvers, Massachusetts. Prior to this, he had begun his working years as a dedicated lineman for Mass Electric. Henry's work ethic, intelligence and leadership were admired by his colleagues and those who had the pleasure of working alongside him.
Henry's dedication to his community was as steadfast as his commitment to his profession. He was the first known Eagle Scout from Danvers, Massachusetts, a rank that exemplified his lifelong belief in service and preparedness. His involvement in local initiatives had continued as a member and past president of the Danvers Rotary Club and a member of the Danvers Touchdown Club, Danvers Youth Hockey, and Danvers Little League Organizations. Through those associations, he forged deep connections and contributed to the betterment of his community.
An avid traveler, Henry found joy in exploring new places and making memories with his family and friends. He cherished the times spent at Lake Winnipesaukee in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, the excitement of Las Vegas, Nevada, the majestic beauty of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, and the serene beaches of the many Caribbean Islands. His adventures took him on multiple memorable trips to Aruba and to the magical world of Disney. These journeys were not just trips but a collection of moments that Henry treasured deeply.
Henry was known as the quintessential Mr-Fix-It and a skilled do-it-yourselfer, always ready to tackle a new project or lend a helping hand. His practical skills and resourcefulness were as much a part of his charm as his warm smile and generous heart. A few times per year Henry loved heading out onto the lake in his boat and either just cruising with family and friends or slowing down and casting a fishing lure in search of the big one, either way, boating was a pastime that brought him peace and contentment.
Described by those who knew him as kind, intelligent, and generous, Henry's character was the foundation upon which many relied. His gentle guidance, quick wit, and warm heart will be sorely missed and fondly remembered. Whether it was through his work, volunteer service, or the simple acts of kindness he showed to friends and strangers alike, Henry made a profound difference in the lives of many.
