William "Bill" David Smith Obituary

William David Smith lost his courageous battle with cancer and is now in the loving arms of his Lord and savior pain free.

Born in Slidell, LA, he proudly called himself a “Coon ass.” His parents, Fountain & Nathalie (Seal) Smith preceded him in death.

He proudly served our country in the United States Navy from 1980-1984. He had many great stories to share from his travels. His favorite being Tenerife, Spain. His dream was to take Glenda there to share the beauty. After his Navy travels, in 2022, he was able to visit Montana and Wyoming with his wife and son to check off visiting all 50 states from his bucket list.

Bill was very proud of his coaching status throughout the years. He coached many boys in baseball and football, including his son. Unfortunately, his cancer made him unable to coach since 2018 but he still received lots of phone calls for advice.

In 1992, his southern charm swept Glenda Mechling-Smith off her feet and in 1994 he convinced her to marry her soul mate, of which she happily obliged. With that union, Bill’s pride and joy Jay Mechling-Smith was born. This close family of 3 is now missing a big piece, but the memories will always remain.

Other survivors include 2 brothers, Charley Smith of FL, and James Smith of MS, and a sister Louise. An ex-brother-in-law with whom he remained close, Jimmy O’Berry, LA, his in-laws Jim and Jane Mechling, Argos, IN, and brother and sister in-law Mike and Delane Mechling, CO, and many nieces and nephews from all over the south.

A Gathering of family and friend will take place on July 4, 2024, at the Foker Park, 137 Pond Street, Argos, Indiana at 12:30 p.m.

Memorial Contributions may be made to:  Glenda Mechling-Smith, PO Box 96, Culver, Indiana 46511 to help with medical bills.

Arrangements have been entrusted with the Earl-Grossman Funeral Home, Argos, Indiana
