Paul Gray Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Fire Prevention Officer Paul Gray on April 18th, 2024. After a valiant battle with occupational cancer, Paul leaves a legacy of dedication and courage.

The son of Marlene Gray of Milverton and the late Richard Gray, Paul passed away in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. He is survived by his wife Deborah, his mother, and his stepsons Teo and Cole Blaikie.

Paul attended Milverton Public School and graduated from Stratford Central Secondary School. He attended Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, studying Geography and Outdoor Recreation.

Paul first visited the Yukon with Katimavik. As a young man from Ontario’s farm country, he fell in love with the wide-open spaces and beauty of the north. Through university, his summers were spent on the river systems of the Yukon and Southeast Alaska doing salmon conservation work for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and building lifelong friendships. A brief stint in construction back in Ontario convinced him there had to be a better way to earn a living, and it was certain to be found in the Yukon.

Paul began his career with the City of Whitehorse in 1988 as a Bylaw Constable, transitioning into the role of a firefighter in 2005, ultimately serving as a fire prevention officer from 2017. His commitment to public safety was unwavering, marked by courage and a profound sense of duty.

Paul loved his annual long-distance motorcycle rides with his friends and colleagues, building itineraries and plans throughout the year. A determined and hopeful farmer and an optimistic beekeeper, Paul loved spending time on his farm in Tagish, especially if it included hours of tractor time. He leaves a legacy of canyoneering, cast iron, and laughter; Paul's comedic timing was unrivalled, a true master of the arched eyebrow and the one-liner.

Paul Gray’s contributions to the community of Whitehorse are immeasurable. His spirit—a blend of kindness, bravery, and a relentless commitment to the protection of others, governed all aspects of his life. He will be remembered not only for his service, but for his generosity, compassion, and honour. His wife and family will remember his quiet acts of love, large and small, that said more than his words ever could.

Paul’s funeral was held June 2nd in Whitehorse, Yukon.
