Tony Obituary

Anthony Lewis Green (Tony) of Aurora, Ill, passed away suddenly on June 4, 2024. He was born on June 18,1955 in Chicago to Vivian Elaine and Lewis Richmond Green. Tony was a beloved companion, father, brother, friend, colleague, cousin and more.

All who knew Tony knew him as very smart with a sense of humor that was sometimes dry, yet always funny and witty. His senior class at Morgan Park High School in Chicago voted him the "funniest" in the class of 1973. His love for the Supremes is legendary. He would attend every concert and often followed them to out-of-town performances. He began as a fan and quickly became a friend to some in the group.

Tony attended Hampton University in Hampton, VA, graduating in 1977. It was there he met his companion of 48 years, Melvin Smith. Together they raised Tatyanna Smith as their daughter in their Aurora, Ill home.

Tony's professional career was spent primarily at Encyclopedia Britannica, where he served in a number of roles including writer, copy editor, proofreader and fact checker. He retired in 2016 and later took on a part time job at Target where he was a beloved and valued employee. Although a retiree, he treated the job with the professionalism and work ethic that he'd done his entire career, and he was loved by his colleagues and supervisors.

Tony was preceded in death by his parents, Bobby and Vivian Gilliam, his loving grandmother Lena Jackson, a host of other beloved family members, and his precious dogs. He is survived by his companion Melvin Smith and their daughter Tatyanna Smith, brother Carlton Gilliam, brother Michael Green, sister Cheryl Green, sister Stephanie Green, niece Kierstin Gilliam, niece Kassidy Gilliam and a host of cousins and family members-in-love.

A memorial service will take place on June 22, 2024 at 11:00am at St. Mark's Luthern Church, 27 Edgelawn Drive Aurora, Ill 60506.
