Roger Kritz Obituary

Roger L. Kritz, 88, of Dubuque, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, June 7, 2024, at Hawkeye Care Center Dubuque, Iowa.  In honoring Roger’s wishes, no services will be held.

Roger was born on March 22, 1936 in Iowa City, Iowa to James Louis and Lola Anita (Lee) Kritz. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1954.  In 1957 Roger joined the U.S. Navy where he was in the Construction Battalion and KA106 Cargo Attack until 1960.   After returning from the Navy, he worked at John Deere Dubuque Works for 30 1/2 years as a metal fabricator.  He simultaneously farmed on 270 acres outside of Colesburg, Iowa until 1988.

Roger married Ginger L. Apel on Dec. 27, 1969.  They were blessed with two children, Keith (Jennifer) Kritz and Rebecca (Jason) Loney; three grandchildren, Jacob Kritz, Connor Loney and Brayden Loney;  and three great-grandchildren, James Kritz, Cheyanne Kritz and Jerimiah Kritz.

When not working Roger could be found hunting, working on one of his many classic vehicles, or in the garden.   Roger enjoyed hunting with his youngest brother and his friends.  He earned a spot in Iowa’s record books with a beautiful trophy buck.   He was a talented mechanic and did nearly all of the work on his vehicles by himself.  On Thursdays you could find him walking around Graffiti Nights visiting with old friends and bonding with new friends.  Gardening was a passion for Roger and he would always plant extra so he could share produce with his family, friends and neighbors.

He is survived by his two children, Keith (Jennifer) Kritz and Rebecca (Jason) Loney; three grandchildren, Jacob Kritz, Connor Loney and Brayden Loney; two great-grandchildren, Cheyanne Kritz and Jerimiah Kritz; one sister, Joyce Moore; and one brother, Roy (Judy) Kritz.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ginger Kritz; his parents, James and Anita Kritz; three brothers, James Kritz Jr, Donald Kritz, and Paul Kritz; one sister, Carol Shaffer and a grandson, James Kritz III.

The family would like to thank the staff at Unity Point Hospital, the University of Iowa Hospital, Hawkeye Care Center, and St. Croix Hospice for their professional and kind treatment of Roger and family while under their care.
