Zhiliang Wang, PhD 


1939-2024 (age 85) 


Dr. Zhiliang Wang passed away peacefully on June 10th,2024, at the age of 85, in  Vallejo, California, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife Daie, daughter  Brooke, son-in-law Kevin, granddaughter Avery, and grandson Jacob. 


Zhiliang was born in Beijing, China in 1939. He showed brilliance early on by  winning the Beijing city wide high school math contest, in turn securing a coveted spot at  Beijing University. He received his master's degree in 1966 from Beijing University.  Zhiliang begin his career in civil engineering in Beijing after graduation, and in 1983 came to  the United States as a visiting scholar at UC Davis. There, he received his Doctorate in Civil  Engineering in 1989, and began working for AMEC Geomatric Consultants as a Senior  Engineer. Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Wang played a pivotal role in the advancement of the field of earthquake engineering. Some of his studies and research can  still be found in civil engineering text books today. Zhiliang retired in 2012, but was still  asked to do consulting work until recent years. 


Zhiliang met his wife Daie in high school, they were both interested in music and  dance, Zhiliang played piano to accompany Daie’s dance performances. They married in  1967 in Beijing, and had their only daughter in 1973. The entire family immigrated to the  United States in 1985 and settled in Davis, then the San Francisco Bay Area. Throughout  his life, Zhiliang was a loving husband and father, always being there for his family. 


In retirement, Zhiliang continued to play piano, was an avid gardener, and was  always eager to hear of his grandchildrens’ new achievements, no matter how small. He  also traveled the world with his wife, and enjoyed having music filled gatherings with their  friends. Zhiliang will be deeply missed and forever cherished. 


Funeral services will be held on Saturday 6/29 at 10:00 am
