Germaine William Porter Obituary

Germaine William Porter, 49, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, May 31, 2024, with his mother and sister by his side.  He fought bravely for two and a half years after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in November 2021, enduring multiple surgeries and numerous rounds of chemotherapy and radiation. Germaine's larger-than-life personality, charm, and quick wit kept everyone laughing. Known for his immense generosity, he was always ready to help anyone in need.

A natural athlete, Germaine instilled a strong work ethic and team spirit in his son, Payton Porter. He also valued education and was the biggest supporter of his daughter, Deja Hughston, throughout her academic journey, all the way up to graduate school. Germaine was deeply loved by his family: his mother, Susan Carter; his father, Gordon Carter; and his sister, Cynthia Porter. In his mid-twenties, he welcomed his first child, Deja Hughston. Later, he met Ashby Johnson, the love of his life, and together they had their son, Payton Porter.

Germaine's family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the medical teams that extended his life after his diagnosis: Dr. Z at the University of Virginia, who performed his Whipple surgery; Nina at the Hospice of the Piedmont, who provided compassionate home care; and his personal favorite, Dr. Erin McLoughlin at Martha Jefferson Hospital. Germaine wished for many stories to be shared in his honor in the coming days, weeks, months, and years.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Cancer Society or The Cancer Center at Martha Jefferson Hospital.
