John "Jack" Ryland Cardwell, Jr. Obituary

Cardwell, Jr., John Ryland “Jack”; died June 7, 2024.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Tierney Cardwell, and parents, John Ryland and Dorothy Martin Cardwell.  Jack is survived by his two daughters, Brooke Anne Cardwell Hunter and Rebecca Cardwell Smith, their husbands Lee Hunter and John Smith, and grandchildren, Jordan Mitchell Smith, Abigail Brooke Smith, Emma Ryland Hunter, and Claire Presley Smith.  Born December 31, 1938, Jack was a life-long Northside Richmond resident.  He attended Thomas Jefferson High School and Mars Hill College and served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve.  Jack spent his entire career at Reynolds Metals/Alcoa.  The loves of Jack’s life were his family, friends who became family, home-cooked meals, and the water.  Favorite memories included sitting around the table talking with his parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins for so long that Sunday dinner was brought back out for supper, rabbit hunting in the country with his father and dogs, having fun with Jean and her cousins on the Mattaponi River, boating and fishing on the Rappahannock River, picking crabs, and teaching his girls to waterski.  Jack’s dreams came true when he and Jean bought a condo on Gwynn’s Island, where he spent countless afternoons sitting on the deck watching the boats go by, talking to neighbors, and watching his grandchildren grow up.  Interment at Mt. Calvary Cemetery on Wednesday, June 19, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.  Afterwards, please join the family to celebrate Jack’s life at Willow Oaks Country Club from 4-6 p.m.
