Ricardo "Ric" Cortes Obituary

Ricardo “Ric” Cortes, 89, of Pinehurst, passed peacefully at the FirstHealth Hospice House on Friday, June 7th.

Born on December 27, 1934, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania to Eugenia and Alfred Cortes. Following high school graduation Ric attended the University of Pittsburgh. Ric went on to service in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He had earned the rank of S/Sgt before his honorable discharge.

Ric met Geraldine Dowdell in school, and they were married in 1956. Both Gerry and Ric were people with strong family values. They eventually became parents to two sons, Larry and Jimmy. The growth of the family continued with the addition of six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Being parents and grandparents was their greatest blessing.

Ric spent his career in drafting and engineering. He worked for the Kelly Springfield Tire Company, a division of Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Cumberland, MD. In 1997, Gerry and Ric retired to Pinehurst to be near their dear friends, Mary and Red Sheridan. The foursome had all been friends since grade school. They became members of Sacred Heart. Ric and Gerry built three houses in Pinehurst, all under Ric’s watchful eye during the design and construction phase.

Ric was passionate about his golf game, and he loved to build/craft things with his hands. He was always the one to lend a neighbor a helping hand. He was a doer, not much of a talker. A life well lived.

Ric is survived by Gerry, his wife of 68 years; their two sons, Larry and wife, Leslie, and Jimmy and wife, Patty; his six grandchildren, Justin Cortes, Scott Cortes and wife Melinda, Claire Flaherty and husband Mike, and their son, Griffin, Kyndall Owings and husband Seth, Connor Cortes and Lydia Cortes; and two sisters, Isabel Sadosky and Theresa Lux.

A funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday, June 19th, 11:00 am at Sacred Heart Church, 300 Dundee Rd. Pinehurst. Committal prayers with military honors will be rendered at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery on Thursday, June 20th at 10:00 am.

Services are entrusted to Boles Funeral Home of Pinehurst.
