Vince Martinez Obituary

Vincent Richard Martinez, 81, of Monett passed peacefully at his home on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, surrounded by his family. Vincent was born on September 14, 1942 in Fort Devens, Massachusetts to Lucille and Joseph Martinez. His family moved to Monett in 1948 where his father was a railroad mail clerk. Vince was extremely proud of his Hispanic heritage and the fact that his family was the first Hispanic family in southwest Missouri. He attended Monett public schools and was involved in many activities including choir and tennis, where he never lost a match. During high school, he worked as a water safety instructor and lifeguard.

In the fall of 1959, Vince enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he served until 1969. While in the Marines, he completed various assignments. He was as a diver and parachutist in Okinawa, an electronics instructor at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, the radio chief of the 3rd Battalion 5th Marines in Vietnam, and a Sergeant for 3rd Battalion 3rd Marines. After serving two tours in Vietnam, he returned to San Diego to serve two years as a Drill Instructor, while completing his electrical engineering degree at San Diego State University. During his time in the Marines, he also played baseball for the Marine Corps team in Okinawa and studied martial arts, earning a black belt, and continuing to practice into his sixties. Vince received a Bronze Star with Combat V, Navy Commendation with Combat V, and two Purple Hearts.

He manifested his love of learning by applying his knowledge of electronics, sales, and marketing throughout the industry. His career included working for major companies in all aspects of electronics and marketing in increasingly responsible positions within his field, including being National Sales Manager of Dow Chemicals electronic division. Vince had a love of learning, and later completed his MBA at the University of Houston. He had an entrepreneurial spirit and started Martinez Marketing and Sales, and later in his career started Marine Corps Active Wear and Gifts, an internet and catalog business serving the military community which he loved.

Giving back to others was very important to Vince. He often volunteered his time participating in public speaking engagements for the Marine Corps, and served on the school board for Joplin Area Catholic Schools. Vince had many hobbies and interests including hunting, fishing, collecting watches, and most of all, spending time with his loved ones. Vince will be remembered for his storytelling, his love for the Lord, as well as his kindness and smile he shared with everyone he encountered. A guiding principle for Vince was to be nice to people and make at least one person smile and be happy each day.

Vince is survived by his wife Jane Sligar, son Vincent Martinez II (Kayla), son Vincent Mungon (Kim), daughter Tanya Stivers- Spitz, and step-daughters Amy Schoen (Jeff), Lori Daily (Corbin), Grandchildren: Kathryn Huffman (Alec), Sydney Bingham (Riley), Vincent Martinez III “Trey”, Elizabeth Martinez, Trevor Mungon (Nery), Connor Mungon (Allie), Madison Mungon, Tyler Stivers- Spitz (Meghan), Courtney Stivers- Spitz, Ashley Stivers- Spitz, Tiffany Stivers- Spitz, Lauren Looker (Matt), Grant Schoen, Jack Schoen, Cole Schoen, Kate Daily, and Gavin Daily.
