Denise Marie King Obituary

Denise Marie King, born March 10, 1962, in Newport News, VA, gracefully exited this world on June 7, 2024, at the age of 62, leaving behind a legacy of schnitzel recipes and conjugated German verbs.

Denise was once an intrepid high school foreign language teacher, where she spent her days enlightening young minds on the wonders of German grammar. Her students may not have remembered all the vocabulary, but they never forgot her passion for teaching and her uncanny ability to make even the dative case seem interesting.

A woman of many talents, Denise loved cooking almost as much as she loved serving her community at local food banks. She transformed mundane ingredients into culinary masterpieces and had a knack for making everyone feel welcome at her table. Denise earned her Master's degree in Education from Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA—go Hokies!—a testament to her dedication to learning and teaching.

Preceded in death by her father, Buddy King, and her sister, Lisa King, Denise is survived by her son Devon Jackson of Virginia Beach; her mother Shelvia King of Virginia Beach; her sister Melissa Ganzert, along with her husband Kevin and their son Jake of Richmond, VA. Her family fondly remembers her as a loving mother, daughter, sister, and aunt, who could always be counted on to whip up a delicious meal or lend a helping hand.

A private celebration of Denise's life will be held at a later date. In the meantime, those who wish to honor her memory are encouraged to make contributions to the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad by clicking HERE. You may also visit her Tribute page at AltmeyerFH.com to share memories and offer condolences to the family.

Denise's departure leaves a gaping hole in our hearts, but her spirit will live on through the many lives she touched, the meals she cooked, and the German verbs she inspired us to remember—occasionally correctly.

Altmeyer Funeral Home, Southside Chapel, 5033 Rouse Drive, Virginia Beach, VA is honored to serve the King family.
