Laura’ Story..

Mrs. Laura Mae Washington Smith (Momae) was born April 10th, 1929, in Columbus, MS. Laura confessed hope in Christ at an early age and was baptized at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church in Crawford, MS under the leadership of Rev. Floyd Thomas. She later joined Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church in Kankakee, IL under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Frank Smith She served as a mother of the church for 40 plus years.


Laura enjoyed going to church, gardening, watching basketball and baseball, cooking, and sewing. She also loved nurturing and fostering children. She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.


Laura humbly departed this life on Monday June 3rd, 2024, at her home. She leaves to cherish her precious memory five sons and four daughters. Jimmy (Mary) Martin of Tupelo, MS. Alton Smith of Kankakee IL. MacArthur (Sandra) Smith of Grand Rapids, MI. Charlie III (Belinda) Smith of Kankakee, IL. Eddie Smith of Grand Rapids, MI. Mary Walter, Doris Dabney of Kankakee IL. Claudine Smith of Grand Rapids, MI and Oaklon Smith of Kankakee IL; one special daughter Azalea Martin of Kankakee, IL; 29 grandkids, 49 great grandkids, and 14 great- great grandkids; one surviving sister Carrie Smith of Kankakee, IL; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Special friends Mrs. Mattie Simon, Mother Lizzie Samuels, Mother Dorothy Price and Mother Sarah Robertson. Special appreciated care givers, Shawn Love, Addie Wallace, Florence Edwards, Debbie Sykes and Nicole Springer.

She is preceded in death by her husband Charlie Smith Jr. Her parents Lucie Blanch and James Washington. six children, Robert Mosley Sr., Sarah Smith, Oscar Smith, Sammie Smith, Ellen Smith, Rosie Smith Williams; six siblings Willie Washington, McKinley Washington, Johnny Washington, Ollie Jones, Annie Harris, Freddie Black
