Bill Holt Obituary

William Steven “Bill” Holt, age 71, of Holts Summit, Mo., passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at Capital Region Medical Center.

He was born on July 10, 1952 in Holts Summit, Mo. one of two sons born to Merlin Roscoe and Eleanor Ann (Bailey) Holt.

In his teenage years, Bill spent his evening cruising Missouri Boulevard which is how he crossed paths with Janet Sue Prenger. The two dated for many years before deciding to tie the knot on August 23, 1984 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Bill graduated from Jefferson City High School in 1970 before pursuing further education at Lincoln University. Joining the United States Postal Service in March 1974, he ascended to the role of Post Master, a position he held until retiring in August 2007. Post-retirement, he ventured into entrepreneurship, owning and managing B&M Auto Sales.

A man of privacy, Bill cherished quiet moments at home with his wife and their beloved dogs, a constant presence in his life. Their current pack, including Augie, Dolly, and Trixie, brought warmth and joy to their household. Together, Bill and Janet embarked on journeys across the country, indulging in a bit of gambling, particularly at blackjack tables in destinations like Cripple Creek, Colo. Additionally, Bill supported Janet's passion for collecting antiques, often accompanying her to various shows and markets.

An avid outdoorsman, Bill found joy in racing, snowmobiling, motorcycling, and more. He relished in hunting and was renowned as a skilled tinkerer, earning him the title of the family's go-to "Mr. Fix-it" for everything from home projects and vehicle repairs to smaller tasks such as assembling toys and electronics. He was quoted to say, “If I can’t fix it, it can’t be fixed”. Their home became a haven for fun and laughter, especially for their nieces and nephews, who fondly recall adventures on four-wheelers and Bill's homemade zip-line.

Though reserved in demeanor, Bill's inner circle knew him for his easygoing nature, sharp business sense, and unwavering generosity. His love for family remained his steadfast anchor, ensuring his legacy endures through cherished memories and the bonds he nurtured.

Survivors include: his wife, Janet Holt; five nephews and nieces, Michael Prenger (Cheryl) of Wentzville, Mo., Kara Holt of Jefferson City, Mo., Shawn Prenger (Julie) of Washington, Mo., Cole Prenger (Elizabeth) of Fayetteville, Ark., and Bret Prenger (Caitlin) of Fishers, Ind.; and great nieces and great nephews, Braden, Carter, Abigail, Mick, Crosby, Caroline, and Lily.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Richard Holt.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Thursday, June 13, 2024 at Freeman Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Friends of the Jefferson City Animal Shelter, PO Box 105932, Jefferson City, MO 65110 or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
