Theresa Ann Carnevale Grillo Obituary

Theresa Ann (Carnevale) Grillo, 90, of Greenville, North Carolina, passed away at home on June 9, 2024.

Theresa was born to Giovanni Angelo “John” Carnevale and Giuseppina “Josephine” (Stagno) Carnevale on September 18, 1933, in Harrison, Westchester County, New York. The fifth daughter of six children, Theresa grew up a tom boy who could run as fast and throw as hard as any boy on her street.

In 1946, Theresa met the love of her life, John Joseph Grillo. For 5 years, John wooed Theresa on the stoop of her parent’s home before he was drafted into the Army and left for training in Fort Benning, Georgia. Theresa took a train to see John and the two were married in Phenix City, Alabama on November 5, 1951, before she returned to New York to make a home for John to return to.

Theresa worked in a local candy factory and while John was in Germany she found and furnished an apartment for them; an accomplishment John, to this very day, is extremely proud.

John returned to Theresa and together they raised 5 children. Theresa was never afraid of hard work whether it was in the house raising their children, helping John to completely renovate a home in Ronkonkoma or outside the home, first in the candy factory and later as a school bus driver with Huntington Coach. Theresa has always cared about people and her serving heart led her to work as a Nursing Assistant in a Woodbury Health related nursing home and later to return to school to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).

Theresa touched many lives including, those who preceded her in death – her parents, her daughter Joanne (Gerald) O’Brien, granddaughter, Stephanie Grillo and siblings, Mary (Carmine) Famiano, Frances (William) Duffy, Rose (Frank) De Silva, Robert Carnevale; and, those who will miss her for the rest of their lives, her beloved husband of 72 years, John, her sons Kenneth P. (Irene) Grillo of Huntington Station NY, John J. (Christine) Grillo of Ayden, NC, Steven J. (Trefalyn Mary) Grillo of Ronkonkoma, NY and Gregg W. (Heather) Grillo of Greenville, NC, her sister Clementina (Tina) Carnevale, Merrick, NY, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and even 1 great-great grandchild.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 12 at Smith Funeral Service, from 1-3 pm and 5-7pm. The Funeral Mass will be conducted at 1:30 pm on Thursday, June 13 at Saint Peter Catholic Church, 2700 E. 4th Street, Greenville, NC with the family receiving friends at 1pm at the church.

Additional services will be held at Moloney's Lake Funeral Home in Lake Ronkonkoma, New York.
