Ruth M. Shapiro passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on June 10, 2024, in Mishawaka, Indiana at Ernestine M. Raclin Hospice House. Born on June 6, 1935, in Clinton, Indiana, Ruth was the beloved daughter of William Alkire and Violet (Burroughs) Alkire Lombardi.

Ruth lived a full and vibrant life, marked by her dedication to her family and community. She was a loving wife to the late Phillip B. Shapiro and a nurturing mother to her children. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Phillip, her daughter Terri Martin, and her brothers Kenneth, Russell, and George Alkire.

She is survived by her daughters, Diane (Bill) O'Banion of New Carlisle, Vicky Clifford, and Julia Shapiro, both of South Bend; sons, Mark Shapiro, Michael Shapiro, and JR (Laurie) Shapiro, all of South Bend.  She leaves behind a legacy of love with her six grandchildren: Kelly and Kayla O'Banion, Sierra and Rod "Pickles" Chappell, and Brandy and Casey Clifford; eleven great-grandchildren, Robbie, Taylor, Clinton, Jayda, Jaythan, Katalina, Kailani, Khaleesi, Sydney, and Stanley, Jr., as well as two great-great-grandchildren, Kaylee and Mark.  Ruth's brother-in-law, Norman Chramoff of Los Angeles, CA, also survives her.

Ruth was a homemaker and co-owner of the security business PNR Enterprises.

Ruth was a proud auxiliary member of Post 284, where she enjoyed dancing every Friday night. Her civic duty extended to serving as a St. Joseph County Poll Worker and supporting local political campaigns, including being a member of the Tim Roemer Campaign.

Services to honor Ruth's life will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at Palmer Funeral Home - River Park Chapel. Friends and family are invited to visit with the family two hours before the services. Graveside services will follow at Southlawn Cemetery in South Bend, IN.
