Bill Elder Obituary

Bill Elder, of Sevier County, passed away while surrounded by family on June 8, 2024. He was 89 years old.

Bill was born on Friday the 13th, 1934 in a small house on King’s Branch. He attended Sevier County High School and was a proud member of the Class of 1952. He graduated from Carson-Newman College where he met the first love of his life, Betty Walkingstick. After a long courtship between Cherokee and Sevier County, they married in 1957. Bill and Betty were married for 39 years and had three children, Debra, Roger and Jon.

After college, Bill served as the Director of the Department of Human Services of Sevier County for 14 years. Bill also served in the Army Reserves for 8 years.

Bill left the Department of Human Services and began a career in the tourism industry. He and Betty had businesses in Cherokee, NC, Gatlinburg and Sevierville. He also stuck to his farming roots and raised cattle on the Elder Family Farm in the Harrisburg Community until the mid 1980’s. At the time of his retirement, he was general manager of Super 8 Hotel of Sevierville.

Bill was also involved in community activities. Bill was president of the Sevier County Jaycees, The Tennessee Jaycees, and the Sevierville Lion Clubs. He served on the Board of the Sevierville Chamber of Commerce and was a charter board member of the Sevierville Lodging Association. He was a member and deacon at Henderson Chapel Baptist Church.

After the death of Betty in 1997, Bill unexpectedly found the second love of his life. After attending the 50th Reunion of the class of ’52, he connected with Anna Lou Ogle, and they married in 2002. Bill and Anna Lou shared 22 years of fun and adventures with their families.

Bill is preceded in death by his father and mother, William Rogers Elder and Viola Williams Elder; his 1st wife, Betty Walkingstick Elder; and his son, Roger Michael Elder.
