Nancy Gazzal Obituary

Mrs. Nancy (Steph) Gazzal, 79, passed away peacefully, with the love of her family in her heart, Sunday, June 9, 2024, at the St. Luke’s Home.

Nancy was born in Utica, February 14, 1945, a daughter of the late Charles and Josephine (Canaan) Steph. She was raised and educated locally and a graduate of St. Francis DeSales School. On November 6, 1967, Nancy was joined in marriage to John Gazzal. John and Nancy shared 53 years of family, work, commitment, and marriage, until her beloved John passed away on March 6, 2021.

Nancy worked for many years, but, her favorite occupation of all was taking care of her family. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, who made it clear that family was what mattered above all else. She adored each and every one of her grandchildren, although her boys always held a special place in her heart. Nancy enjoyed bowling and loved to play cards with her sisters every Thursday. She was a great baker and loved to cook, especially for family meals.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Sherry Gazzal; her daughters and sons-in-law, Michelle and Bernard Peck, Kelley Gazzal, and Kimberly and Frank Spatto; beloved grandchildren, Mari-Lea and Jon Gazzal, Torrie, Alaina, and Sarah Peck, Andrew and Alexander Klockowski, and Frankie and Madelyn Spatto; her siblings, Patricia Rich, Carol and Frederick Roth, and Diana and Steve Goss; sister-in-law, and brother-in-law, Janet and Martin Agosto; a special aunt, Mary Nassimos; Godchildren, Lee Michael Rich, Dana Damiano, and Melinda Felblinger; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, John Gazzal; sisters and brother-in-law, Sharon and Richard Zawatski, and Linda Marmalstein; brother-in-law, Richard Rich; in-laws, Anthony and Helen (Nassimos) Gazzal; nephews, Joseph Roth and Aaron Thomas; and special aunt, Julia Nassimos.

Nancy’s Liturgy of the Faithful Departed, will be held on Saturday, June 15, at 10 a.m., at St. Basil’s Greek Melkite Catholic Church, 901 Sherman Drive, Utica, offered by V. Rev. James Koury. The family will greet visitors prior to mass from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., at church. Private interment will be in the family plot in Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers and in memory of Nancy, please consider a donation to St. Basil’s Greek Melkite Catholic Church. Envelopes will be available at church.

The family would like to thank the nursing staff at the St. Luke’s Home, in New Hartford, for their care and compassion during Nancy’s stay, especially Mary Brady and the entire Barton North staff (formerly Clark West).
