Dennis L. "Denny" Huff Obituary

Dennis L. Huff, 76, a gentle and generous man, was peacefully received by the Lord on Sunday morning June 9, 2024. He was born June 14, 1947 in Elkhart, IN.  After a short engagement, Dennis married the love of his life, Brenda Barrett Velie, at Central Christian Church on September 18, 1992.

He is survived by his best friend and soulmate Brenda. Dennis and Brenda were able to retire early, allowing them the freedom to fully enjoy each other’s company in their marriage of almost 32 years.  Together they spent many years traveling across the country, exploring natural wonders, culinary delights, the famed Route 66, and browsing for antiques. Their shared love of reading has taken them to countless bookstores, including every Barnes & Nobles between here and Colorado Springs! Their home was filled with love, laughter, music, and appreciation for time spent with family.

In addition, he will be deeply missed by his stepchildren who held a special place in his heart; Adam Velie of Colorado Springs, CO, Nathan Velie (Vanessa) of Goshen, IN, Melissa Velie of West Olive, MI. Dennis was known as Papa D to his cherished grandchildren Brittani Sabourin (Ray), Jade Revelle (Garrett), Gunner Swope, Kaitlin Velie, Allison Velie, Noah Velie and two great grandsons, Xander Vick and Oakley Sabourin. He also leaves behind several beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dennis was preceded in death by the two amazing women who raised him, his mother, Rachel Huff and grandmother, Carrie Fike. They fostered his love of music when he started playing the piano at the age of 5.

A talented musician, he graduated cum laude with a Bachelors of Music from North Central College in 1969 and received his Masters of Music in 1971 from DePauw University. Dennis worked in banking from 1971-1997, starting his career at St. Joseph Valley Bank until retiring from Valley American.

For over 54 years, he worked at numerous churches as a professional organist, Choir Director, and pianist.  Dennis felt the Lord called him to express himself through his most treasured instrument, the organ. His passion and faith inspired him to play everywhere life took him, from Elkhart, Indiana to Greensboro, North Carolina. He retired from playing professionally in 2015 from First Presbyterian Church in Goshen, Indiana where he was later honored as Organist Emeritus. Friends and family continued to be blessed by his playing until his passing. His love for music was a constant source of joy throughout his life, bringing comfort in times of sorrow and celebrating the moments of purest happiness. Not only did Dennis play for church services, weddings, and funerals, he also enjoyed playing the tuba in the Elkhart Municipal Band and later playing with and conducting the New Horizons Band of Elkhart.

Dennis found joy in the unique and the unusual. His love for Edsels, those distinctive automobiles of a bygone era, was legendary among those who knew him best. He also enjoyed the hunt of finding rarities in U.S. currency. He spent countless hours meticulously examining each bill that came into his possession. His expansive knowledge on currency irregularities and errors was well known by those with a similar passion.

Please join the family for an informal praise service at the Velie residence, 57415 Emerald Chase Lane, Goshen, IN on Friday June 21st at 3 pm.  There will be a celebration of life immediately following.   Donations may be made in memory of Dennis Huff to the Tunnels to Tower Foundation (T2T.org) or Center for Hospice Care.
