Obituary

Filomena Mendez, a beacon of love and gentleness, passed away on June 8, 2024, at the age of 94 in Lansing, MI. Born on February 16, 1930, in Converse, TX, to Domingo and Maria Guerrero, she lived a life marked by passion and devotion to her family.


Filomena's life was one of unwavering commitment to her role as a homemaker, a vocation she cherished deeply. She was the beloved wife of the late Felix Mendez and the center of a large, loving family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband of 57 years, her son Felix Mendez Jr., and her brothers Jesse, Joe, and Domingo Guerrero, as well as her sisters Julia Brown and Hope Paez.


Her legacy continues through her surviving children, Luci (Gary) Manthei, Rick Mendez, and Lori (Mike) Mercer. Filomena was a proud grandmother to 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren, whose lives have been enriched by her love and wisdom. Her family extended to numerous adoring nieces and nephews who will also miss her dearly.


Filomena's interests included gardening, cooking, and traveling, along with a fondness for crossword puzzles and word searches. She was a longtime attendee of Mt. Hope Church in Lansing, where her presence will be profoundly missed.


Visitation will be held at Palmer, Bush & Jensen Family Funeral Homes Delta Chapel on Monday, June 17 from 4:00pm-7:00pm. The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, June 18 at 11:00am with Pastor James Guerrero presiding. The family will receive friends starting at 10:00am on Tuesday. Interment will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery following the Funeral Service.


Described as loving, gentle, and passionate, Filomena Mendez will be remembered for the warmth and kindness she extended to all who knew her. Her unwavering spirit and the cherished memories she created will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and friends.


In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sparrow Hospice of Mid-Michigan.
