Barbara S. Ziems Obituary

Barbara Smith Ziems, 85 years old of Pemberville, Ohio passed away on June 8th, 2024 after battling a recent illness. Our matriarch is at peace.

Barb was born August 27, 1938 in Danville, Kentucky to parents Wayne and Claire Smith. Most of Barb’s childhood years were spent growing up in Corydon, Indiana. She moved to Toledo, Ohio for her senior year and attended Whitmer High School. It was there she met and married her first husband of 25 years, Mark L. Barton. Barb and Mark had three children, Beth (Doug) DeArmond, Stu (Beth) Barton, and Matt (Kim) Barton, who survive.

Barb graduated from the Flower Hospital School of Nursing in 1958. She had a long career in nursing at Flower Hospital in Sylvania, Ohio where she was beloved by her patients and co-workers, and mentored many young nurses over the years. She left a legacy of compassion and care.

Barb was an excellent seamstress, loved animals, and later in life took up knitting as a hobby. Barb loved a good margarita, always experimenting to find the best recipe. Barb loved camping, and taught her children a love of nature and the great outdoors. She traveled the United States and Canada in tents, trailers and eventually motor homes. She was always searching for the secluded off-road places to stay. In her younger years, she was the quintessential hippie traveling the backroads and dry camping with her family.

As Barbara’s children came of age, she and Mark divorced and she met her second husband Dave Ziems, who she continued to travel with. They’ve shared many adventures over their long marriage. Barb and Dave have lived in Newport News VA, Richmond VA, and Oak Harbor OH, eventually settling at Otterbein Village in Pemberville, Ohio.

Barbara was preceded in death by her loving parents, Wayne and Claire Smith. Barbara is also survived by her husband David Ziems, her siblings Stuart (Jenny) Smith, Cathy (Cary) Lester, Julie (Rob) Wilson and Bruce (Carol) Smith. Grandchildren Adam (Lindsey) DeArmond, Ben (Natalie) DeArmond, Sam (Kristin) DeArmond, Sara (John) Roemer, Grace (Josh) Barton, Addie (Ben) Dresser, Ema, Aiden and Ashlynn Barton (Alex). Barb is also survived by 16 beautiful great-grandchildren.

Barb lived a wonderful adventurous life. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hospice of Northwest Ohio in her memory. Those that would like to share a note of sympathy with the family may do so at www.marshfuneralhomes.com
