Margaret W. Brooke Obituary

On June 8, 2024, Margaret Woodall Brooke passed away peacefully with her family by her side. Born in Grenada, MS in 1938, her formative years were spent in Coffeeville, MS before settling in Northern Virginia.


She was the widow of Capt. James Franklin Brooke, III, USN (Ret). She is survived by her loving children James F., IV; son and daughter Edward and Mary Beth; her two beloved grandchildren, Taylor and Timmy; niece and nephew Margie and Ted; and many extended family members an  dear friends. She was predeceased by her adored brother Edward.


Upon graduation from Millsaps College (Jackson, MS) in 1960, Margaret embarked on a career  in Education, becoming an elementary school teacher. After moving to Hampton, VA, she met and married the love of her life, Jim.


In 1969, Margaret gave birth to son Jay and moved to Annandale, VA where she would reside with her family for over 40 years. Son Eddie would be born in 1973. As her children grew, she returned to her passion, education, working as an instructional assistant until retirement.


After retirement, Margaret and Jim relocated to Greenspring Village where she was active in many endeavors, including the Choristors and the GSV Library. Once again she returned to education as a senior volunteer at a local elementary school as part of a GSV program.


Visitation is being held at the Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Road, Fairfax, VA, on Saturday, June 15 from 2 to 6pm. A memorial service will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 8922 Little River Turnpike, Fairfax VA, on Saturday, July 6 at 11am. Interment at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Inova Schar Cancer Institute via join.inova.org/cancerservices or c/o Inova Health Foundation, 8095 Innovation Park Dr., Fairfax, VA 22031.
