Colleen Tara O'Reilly Obituary

O’REILLY -- Colleen, age 53, died unexpectedly in her home in Brookfield, Connecticut on June 8th. A longtime resident of Hastings-on-Hudson, NY, she was the adored daughter of Roseanne O’Reilly and the late Harry O’Reilly, sister of Sean O’Reilly and sister-in-law of Lisa O’Reilly. Colleen was the beloved aunt of Kaitlin and Grace O’Reilly who idolized her. She is also survived by her uncle, Joseph Nespola and Aunts, Camille Lent and Lorraine Harla along with many loving cousins.

Known for her dedication to her chosen profession as a teacher, Colleen taught history at the Albert Leonard Middle School in New Rochelle, NY for over 15 years. She was an educator and advocate in the true sense of the word. Whether teaching or leading her Model UN club at the middle school, she demonstrated an unprecedented passion and unwavering dedication to her students and acted as a mentor for many.

Her love for children extended to her role as foster parent as she so generously brought children into her home and gave them the love, kindness, caring and stability that they otherwise had no source to receive. She truly loved them as her own and formed strong and loving bonds with the children she parented.

Colleen was also a great lover of animals with a shirt proclaiming “Peace, Love, Dogs.” A very kind, gentle and giving person, Colleen seemed to possess the qualities that represent the best in all of us. Colleen never seemed to accept things as they were – but had bigger dreams of what they could be that might be better and more kind, inclusive and giving. An avid Mets fan, Colleen enjoyed going to baseball games with her brother and nieces.

Colleen graduated from Hastings-on-Hudson High School in 1989, she went on to earn her undergraduate degree from Lehman College and later a Masters Degree in Education from Iona College.

No matter her many educational and career accomplishments, Colleen had such a pure heart. She was like a kid at Christmas and always full of enthusiasm for holidays and other family celebrations. She spread so much joy. Colleen leaves behind a legacy of endless love, kindness and generosity and will be missed by her family and friends who loved her so, so much.

Anyone who wishes to honor her memory can donate to Connecticut Alliance of Foster & Adoptive Families, 2189 Silas Deane Highway, Suite 2, Rocky Hill, Connecticut 06067 CAFAFCT.org
