Phyllis Mae Metzger Obituary

Phyllis Metzger of Quincy, Illinois, went to be with her Lord on June 8, 2024, at Blessing Hospital at the age of 85.


Phyllis was born at her home in Fowler, Illinois, the daughter of Oliver and Agnes Wiewel. She was a 1956 graduate of Liberty High School. She married Martin (Marty) Metzger on July 5, 1958.


Phyllis was a member of Quincy Faith Church in Quincy. Phyllis’ greatest enjoyment came from spending time with her family, hanging out with her two sisters (the “Golden Girls”), and bringing the gospel of Jesus Christ to the incarcerated through Word of Life Prison Ministry alongside her husband Marty. She enjoyed volunteering at her church, helping with the monthly newsletter mailing at WTJR TV station, and leading Bible studies at nursing homes or in her home. She was a loving sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.


She is survived by her six children: her two sons Randy, and his wife, Lori, of Camp Point, Illinois, and Kenny of Quincy; and her four daughters, Tina Robinson, and her husband, Terry, of Quincy, Annette Leerhoff of Quincy, Brenda Walton, and her husband, Brent, of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, and Angie Huels, and her husband, Tim, of Waterloo, Illinois; by twelve grandchildren: Michael Metzger (Kristin) of Jefferson City, Missouri, Nathan Metzger (Rachel) of Seattle, Washington, Kamren Metzger (Hilliary) of Geff, Illinois, Jennifer Barry (Keith) of Payson, Illinois, Brandon Terstegge (Mariah) of Quincy, Neil Leerhoff of Quincy, Yale Cason (Katie) of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, Joshua Walton of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, Emma Maag (John) of Whiteland, Indiana, Ben Huels of Chicago, Illinois, Clare Huels of Waterloo, Illinois, and Henry Huels of Waterloo, Illinois; by thirteen great-grandchildren: Brody Metzger, Jonah Metzger, Maci Metzger, Stella Metzger, Wren Metzger, Cora Metzger, Brooks Metzger, Peyton Barry, Parker Barry, Harper Terstegge, Nolan Terstegge, Colin Cason, Kaylee Cason; by her siblings: Betty McCoy of Shelbyville, Missouri, Dick Wiewel (Dee) of Quincy, Theresa Ehrhardt (Spike) of Hannibal, Missouri, Dale Wiewel (Carla) of Fowler, Illinois, Mark (Paulette) Wiewel of Mendon, Illinois, Terry Wiewel (Cathy) of Maywood, Missouri, Brad Wiewel of Shelbyville, Missouri, and Bruce Wiewel of New London, Missouri; and by numerous nieces and nephews.


She was preceded in death by her parents: Oliver (4/24/2002) and Agnes (10/30/2004); by her husband, Martin (1/29/2005), and by her four brothers: Floyd (5/3/2022), Larry (11/2/2001), Edward (4/23/2017), and Mike (7/5/2004).


Visitation: 8:30 am - 10:30 am, Thursday June 13, 2024 at Quincy Faith Church (4000 State St., Quincy, IL 62305).


Services: 10:30 am Thursday, June 13, 2024 at Quincy Faith Church, with Pastor Andreas Mannhardt officiating. Graveside service will follow in Golden Memorial Gardens, Golden, IL.
