Robert E. Monica Obituary

Robert E. Monica, age 96, passed away June 8, 2024 in Midland, MI. He was born August 10, 1927 in Portland, OR, the son of the late Willard N. and Eva J. Monica. The family later relocated to Newberry, MI.

Bob was a kind, loving man who was devoted to his family and loved nothing more than spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved sharing stories of his childhood in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and his extraordinary career at The Dow Chemical Company, Cordis Dow and Ashai Dow.

Education was of utmost importance to him, and he made it possible for all of his children and grandchildren to attend college. He also enabled numerous students at Michigan Technological University, Central Michigan University and Delta College to pursue their dreams by funding scholarships at each of these schools. There were also many Midland-based charities that benefited from his generosity. Bob's illustrious career took him to nearly every continent but his favorite place was The Hiawatha Sportsman Club in Naubinway, MI. He spent many days there fishing, hunting and snowmobiling with family and friends.

Bob is survived by his children, Victoria, John, Jerry (Nancy), Beth (Rick) Zuehlke, Susan and Jim. Twelve grandchildren, Matthew (Kristin), Daniel (Lauren), Robert (Jade) and Michael Giering, Tara (Nick) Pergasch, Carly (Mike) Coca, Rianne (Peter) Rybinski, Megan Monica, Nickelle (Jon) Minsloff, Rachel (Jacob) Walter, RJ and Zachary Monica. He was blessed with fifteen great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife Dorothy, daughter Kay and granddaughter Susan Giering.

A proud veteran, Bob served in the US Army and later pursued his passion for Engineering. He graduated from Newberry High School in 1944 and earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan Technological University in 1950. Bob furthered his education by earning a Master’s Degree in Plastics from Princeton University in 1952. He also completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University in 1966.
