Shirley Jane Lucy Leyland Obituary

Shirley Jane Lucy Leyland, Mom, Nana passed away on Friday, May 24, 2024, she was 85 years old. She was born in Richmond, Virginia to Alice Bacon Michael Lucy and Willie Heath Lucy. She is survived by her daughter Stephanie L. McClain (Bryan) and grandchildren, Nancy, Erin, and John, and her son Stephen H. Leyland (Lisa) and grandchildren William and Tyler and her sister Shelby Jean Lucy Hawthorne (Bill) and their daughters Alice H. Allen (Joe) and Mary and great nephews John and William. Shirley got a Bachelor’s Degree from Longwood College and Master’s Degree from Rider University. Most of her life Mom worked as a business and accounting teacher, retiring from Council Rock High School (North) in Bucks County, PA. She loved to travel and visited all 50 states plus Europe, England, Bermuda, Canada, and more. After retiring in PA, Mom and Dad moved to St. Mary’s County MD where Mom became very involved in the Museum Division especially with Piney Pt. Lighthouse Museum & Historic Park. Once Dad retired from Pax River Naval Air Station they moved to Windsor Meade in Williamsburg, VA. Mom loved being a part of and serving the Windsor Meade community, residents, and staff! She loved gardening and planting flowers and would often provide flowers for the residents and staff as well as the Vespers services on Sunday. She enjoyed baking cakes and cookies for everyone, and treasured time with friends and family by playing games and enjoying meals together. Mom had an enlarged heart not only physically but spiritually. She was the center around which our families gathered. She devoted herself to service in whatever community she was a part of. She was a member of the United Methodist Church all her life, most recently at Williamsburg United Methodist Church, and was always giving of her time and talents. A memorial service will be held at 2pm on July 20th in the ballroom at Windsor Meade to celebrate Shirley’s life. At a later time she will be interred next to her husband Walt at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Newport News, VA. Friends are encouraged to visit: http://bucktroutfuneralhome.net to share memories and words of condolence with the family. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Shirley’s name to the Samaritan Program at Windsor Meade, https://www.windsormeade.org/giving-opportunities or FISH, Inc at https://fishwilliamsburg.org/donate-to-fish-williamsburg/
