Nancy Fowlkes Reid Obituary

Nancy Fowlkes Reid, age 83, passed away on June 8, 2024; Born in Honolulu, HI on November 18, 1940 to Naval Commander Hubert Arthur Fowlkes, Sr, and Dorothy Lucille Powers Fowlkes, she was preceded in death by her sister Judy Fowlkes Braun, her brother Hubert Arthur Fowlkes, Jr. and James Craig Reid. She is survived by her two daughters Ashley Moss of Enfield NC (Tom), and Tara Reid of Raleigh. She is also survived by her grandchildren Benton Moss (Morgan), Schuyler Moss, Katie Moss, and her two great granddaughters Merin and Maura Moss, sister-in-law Dinah Cleaton Fowlkes, along with numerous nieces and nephews. She will be dearly missed.

Raised in Virginia Beach, VA, Nancy was the youngest of three children. She was very close to her brother and sister and spent many special times with both of them. She graduated from Princess Anne High School in 1957 and went on to attend East Carolina University, where she met her future husband James Craig Reid. The two married in April 1960. Together, they had 2 daughters, Ashley and Tara. She returned to college and earned her Bachelor of Arts in Education from North Carolina Wesleyan College. She taught 5th grade and kindergarten in North Carolina and Virginia until her retirement in 2004. She loved being an educator and touched the lives of many students during her tenure in the classroom.

Above all else, Nancy loved her family. She served as her mother’s primary care giver until her death. In 2004, she retired to Rocky Mount, NC to be close to her daughters and grandchildren. Her sister Judy was her best friend and together the two of them spent many hours together planning special things for their grandchildren. She was an avid crafter, excelling in quilting, knitting, crocheting, and smocking. She loved antiques and refinished many pieces over the years, some of which were proudly displayed in her home. She was also a master in the kitchen, and she taught both of her daughters the joy of cooking and shared many of her favorite family recipes. She was well known for her fried chicken, pork chops, collard greens, chocolate pies, pickles, home-made jams and jellies and fresh-baked sourdough bread.

Nancy never met a stranger. She could talk to anyone, from any walk of life. Everyone who met her loved her spunk, her spice and her sense of humor. She could always bring a smile to your face and elicit a chuckle.

The family would like to thank Dr. Martha Chesnutt, Amanda Griffin, and Teri Gibson at Boice-Willis Clinic for their many years of devoted care, along with the staff of The Landings at Rocky Mount Mills and Hospice of Wilson for their kind and compassionate aid. Very special thanks go to her friend and caregiver Keeshia Alston, whose companionship brought her many hours of laughter and joy.
