Juanita Marie Thornton Obituary

Juanita Marie Wright-Thornton, affectionately known as “Sissy” to all who adored her, 61 of Hollywood, MD, departed this life peacefully on Tuesday, June 4, 2024 at her residence. Sissy was born on May 20,1963, to the late Raymond Wright and Mary Helena Beal. Juanita was a resident of St. Mary’s County, received her education in Landover, MD and graduated from Duvall High School in 1987.

In 1990s, Juanita’s older brother Ray introduced her to the love of her life Kenneth Thornton. They married on February 15, 1996, Kenneth and Juanita was married for twenty-seven years together and had a daughter, Kyona Wright. Juanita from a previous marriage had a daughter, Chante Battle and Juanita had four stepchildren, Kenny Abney, Markee Abney, Kenneth Thornton and Keah Shandon and two grandchildren, Davonte Battle, and Lamari Porter.

Juanita had a love for not only her family, daycare babies, and the community, but her church family. Sissy kept the family together with keeping tabs on everyone with daily phone calls, texts, and family reunions.

"Nene", the name her daycare babies called her, started caring for children in 1999 and just recently stopped when she got sick in March 2024. Juanita was all about her community.  She would make sure the homeless had a warm meal, or anything they needed; a coat, socks, you name it, she supplied it. Many Thanksgivings and Christmases, Juanita would go and pick up the homeless and bring them back to her house to shower and have a hot meal.

Juanita is preceded in death by her parents, Raymond Wright and Mary Helena Beal, twelve siblings, and two brothers-in- law.

Left to cherish her memories are her daughters, Kyona Wright and Chante Battle; her siblings, Mary Watkins, Alice Young, Edward Young (Belinda), Margie Harrod (Carlton), Hattie Daughtry, and Raymond Wright (Patricia);  her grandsons, Davonte Battle and Lamari Porter, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

Family and friends will unite on Wednesday, June 12, 2024 for visitation at 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. at Free Worship Ministries, 21600 Great Mills Road, Unit #20, Lexington Park, MD 20653.  Interment will be private.
