James Stretch, Jr. Obituary

James Stretch Jr., a beloved figure known for his deep love of community and his passion for writing and poetry, passed away peacefully last week at the age of 80.

Born in Simsbury, Connecticut, James dedicated his life to helping his community and those around him. His contributions included supporting local charities, volunteering at the local soup kitchen, and advocating for greater public arts, earning him a cherished place in the hearts of many.

James lived life on his own terms, embracing each day with joy and a spirit of adventure. Friends recall the genuine, heartfelt conversations they would share with James over meals, his wonderful sense of humor, and how he found joy in the simplest of pleasures. Whether visiting Hartford’s museums or enjoying a quiet afternoon with a good book or his favorite radio program, his zest for life and ability to find beauty in the mundane left an indelible mark on those who knew him.

From an early age, James displayed a profound talent for the written word. His poetry and essays, like him, were noted for their sincerity and insight. Over the decades, his writings reflected his journey through life, capturing the beauty of everyday moments and the depth of human emotion.

He is survived by his loving sister, Bonnie, who cherished their close bond and the wonderful memories they made.

James Stretch Jr. will be remembered not only for his significant contributions to the community and his literary talents but also for his genuine kindness, infectious laughter, and belief in the goodness of people. His spirit will continue to inspire and uplift all who were fortunate enough to know him, ensuring that his legacy of love, joy, and community endures.

Friends may call at The Ahern Funeral Home, 180 Farmington Ave., Hartford on Thursday, June 13, 2024 from 2:00-4:00pm. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to House of Bread, 27 Chestnut St., Hartford, CT 06120, a community institution James passionately supported throughout his life.
