Dr. Richard Mark Cherpak Obituary

Dr. Richard "Cherp" M. Cherpak, 61, of Fort Myers, FL, passed away on May 25, with his wife by his side. He was born on December 2, 1962, in Jamaica, NY, a neighborhood in Queens; he was raised and educated in Rosedale, NY, later relocating to Dix Hills, NY where he received his primary education.

Richard is the son of the late Andrew and Jeanne (Powers) Cherpak.

On July 25, 2015, he married Wendy Bateman Miga. In their union of over 8 years, the couple shared many laughs. They always knew how to help one another in times of need.

Dr. Cherpak was a well-respected gastroenterologist, who dedicated his career to helping others. He began his medical journey by earning his Bachelor of Science Degree, in Chemistry, from Cornell University, in 1984, and went on to earn a Medical Degree, from the State University of NY Downstate Medical Center in 1988. He completed his internal medicine residency at SUNY Health Science Center, at Stony Brook, and pursued a fellowship at Long Island College Hospital in 1993.

Dr. Cherpak joined Digestive Disease Medicine in New Hartford, NY, in 1993, where he focused on consultation, endoscopy, including ERCP, and nutritional support. He later held a position at LPG Gastroenterology in Fort Myers, FL.

Outside of his professional life, Dr. Cherpak had a passion for cooking, especially his giant meatballs. He enjoyed experimenting with new flavors and sharing his creations with loved ones. Sundays were reserved for his favorite football team, the Vikings, and he always made time for his Sunday football phone calls and texts to family.

Dr. Cherpak is survived by his wife, Wendy; his son and daughter-in-law, Richard "RJ" and Priscilla Cherpak of Port Jefferson, NY; daughters, Shannon Cherpak and Caitlin Cherpak of Port Jefferson, NY. He took great pride in his children and their achievements. He is remembered by stepsons, Joseph Miga of Clinton, NY, and Jeffrey Miga along with his fiancée, Nicole Chrystie of Winter Springs, FL; his granddaughter, Paisley Miga; his brother, Andrew "Andy" James Jr. Cherpak and his companion Trish; a sister, Patty Cherpak and her fur baby, Bode; and the mother of his children, Margaret Cherpak. Cherp shared a special relationship with his in-laws, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charles and Roseanne (Capuana) Bateman; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Heather and Michael Delia and their children, Ellasandra, Michael, and Mason; brother-in-law, Charles Bateman III and his son, Charlie; special friend, Carmen Zammiello, who shared in many vacations and good times; and also, several other aunts, uncles, cousins, and special friends.

He was preceded in death by his nephew and Godson, Andrew James Cherpak III.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff, at Lee Memorial Hospital, in Fort Myers, FL, for the exceptional care and compassion that was shown to Dr. Cherpak at this difficult time.

Dr. Cherpak’s Mass of Christian Burial will commence on Friday, June 14, at 12 Noon, St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish, 648 Jay St., Utica, NY. The Cherpak family will receive visitors in the church immediately following the funeral mass. Arrangements have been entrusted to Adrean Funeral Service, Inc., Utica, NY.

Dr. Cherpak held a special bond with his nephew with Down syndrome, and because of this relationship, please consider contributions to Pathfinder Village Foundation, 3 Chenango Road, Edmonston, NY 13335 or a colon or bladder cancer charity of your choice.
