Tony Norman Handcock
January 12, 1966 - May 28, 2024
Tony Norman Handcock, age 58 of Eastport, Bonavista Bay, peacefully passed away at the
James Paton Memorial Hospital in Gander, May 28, 2024. Born in Gander, NL, January 12,
1966 to Donald Alphaeus (Alph) and Myra Josephine (Josie) Handcock.
Predeceased by his spouse Elspeth (Liz) Docherty, Parents Alph and Josie Handcock,
Grandparents Arthur Norman and Isabelle Handcock, Owen and Myra Chatfield Turner. Left
with great memories are his Brother Gregory Handcock, Sister-in-Law Cynthia Handcock
and a large circle of family and friends.
Tony or Tone as he was affectionately known was always a bundle of energy with a bit of
mischievousness in him. He had a passion for cars from a very early age and turned it into
his life's work. He was an accomplished Auto Body Technician, Automobile Painter,
Mechanic and Welder. It seemed like Tony could turn his hand to just about anything.
Besides the automobile side of things he loved reading and had a penchant for knowledge, it
seemed like if there was anything around to read, he was reading it, books, magazines of all
sorts, right up to cereal boxes. He especially loved reading Newfoundland books and I think
Cassie Brown’s Death on the Ice was his favourite. Tony was always on the move and when
he was quite young would follow the older guys around who were working on their cars. He
had a deep respect for those guys and would always give credit to the ones who helped him
along the way. Tony in his later years would eagerly share his knowledge with others and
often said he has since learned a lot from the ones he had helped out earlier.
Tony moved to Ontario in 1989 and had a large circle of close friends there. There he met
the love of his life, Liz Docherty. They were like peas in a pod. She was one of the few who
could rein him in, a little bit anyway. A lot of Tony’s friends from Ontario have been in contact
lately and it’s very obvious he was loved by many friends and family up there.
Tony lived his life mostly in the fast lane, but really had an appreciation for nature and the
outdoors. He liked moose hunting, trouting, cod fishing, rabbit catching, turkey hunting etc.
and seemed to notice a lot of the smaller and simpler things that probably would go
unnoticed by most when he came to visit.
