Doris Frobel Obituary

Doris Charlotte Frobel, age 91, of Grand Rapids passed away peacefully on Friday, May 24, 2024.

Doris was born in Wyandotte, MI on August 5, 1932, the daughter of Paul and Charlotte (Heine) Waschilewsky. She graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High Schoool and went on to enter Valparaiso University where she graduated with a degree in social work. Doris married Luther Frobel on August 20, 1955. They lived in Laramie, Wyoming while Luther completed college and then moved to the Chicago area and later purchased a home in Clarendon Hills, IL where they resided for many years while raising their family.

Doris was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Hinsdale, IL where she was a member of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML), volunteered for Lutheran Braille Workers, and participated in many school activities. Doris worked as a social worker for Hinsdale Community Service for many years where she helped to meet the needs of many individuals and families in the community.

Doris moved to Grand Rapids in 2004 where she continued her active and social life. She was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church where she was active on the prayer team and LWML. Doris joined the Grand Rapids Newcomers group when she first moved to the area and continued to enjoy many activities with this group including volunteering at Kids Food Basket, playing cards, and going out for lunch. She hosted a monthly book club at her house, enjoyed water walking at the pool, going out for coffee with her neighbors, and engaging in activities at Gilda’s Club. Doris’ strong Christian faith, compassion, caring, and sense of humor were evident to anyone that knew her. She will be missed by many.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Luther. She is survived by her four children, David (Janice) Frobel of Elmhurst, IL, Melanie (Larry) Baumgart of Portage, MI, Dean (Sandy) Frobel of Lombard, IL, and Julie (Todd) Smithee of Lowell, MI; eleven grandchildren, Kevin, Lauren, Danielle, Elizabeth, Eric, Madeline, Jackie, Steven, Molly, Connor, and Erin; and one great-grandchild, Gracie.

Interment and graveside service at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Oak Brook, IL will take place Friday, May 31, 2024.
