David Earley Smith Obituary

David Earley Smith

August 23,1952 - May 24, 2024

David Earley Smith, 71 of Rainsville, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2024. He leaves behind his wife of 51 years, Myra Johnson Smith, as well as his son Jeremy (Amy) and his daughter Amanda (Brandon Renfroe) and seven grandchildren: Sara, Redick, and Ridge Smith and Breanna, Leah, Hadley, and Jackson Renfroe.

David was born on August 23, 1952, and was raised on a small family farm near Ider. His parents, Leonard and Katherine, had a large family. David’s siblings included Patsy Kunkle (Jack), Mickey (Lauvoina), L.A. Jr. (Lesa), Ray (Robin), and Tracy (Cheryll).

After graduating from Ider High School in 1970, he began college at Northeast Community College. To help defray expenses, he drove a bus for the college which included a stop at Church Street in Valley Head, where he picked up another student each day, Myra Lee Johnson. From that humble beginning would ultimately begin a marriage in 1973.

While working on his B.A. and later M.A. at Jacksonville State University, David began a career as a lineman at Farmers’ Telephone Cooperative, concluding with his promotion to assistant manager.

Two passions consumed his life - his children and Democratic politics. He served as Chairman of the Democratic Party in DeKalb County, and proudly proclaimed himself a Democrat to the end. David was a member and former Sunday School Superintendent at Fyffe United Methodist Church. He met his end the same way he led his life: prepared and ready.

He will be laid to rest in Fyffe’s Corinth Cemetery on May 26, 2024. The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 25, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at W.T. Wilson Funeral Home in Rainsville. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 26, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel. Pallbearers will be L.A. Smith, Ray Smith, Tracy Smith, Redick Smith, Ridge Smith, and Griffin Knight.
