Gwendolyn Idelle Heffner Obituary

McColl, SC

Mrs. Gwendolyn Idelle Heffner was born June 16, 1937, in Rockingham, NC. On May 18, 2024, the Lord called her home to be with Himself, her husband of 47 years, Mr. Jimmy Heffner, and their 4 children.  She was the daughter of the late Mrs. Addie A. Prosser. She was a member of the Eastside Baptist Church in McColl.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Addie Prosser, her brothers Leverne, Boyce and Earl Prosser, her husband Jimmy Heffner, sons Dennis, Allen, Vernon, and Joseph Heffner, granddaughter Shauna Kaye Quick, and grandsons Dan Clark and Damon Quick.

Mrs. Gwen leaves behind her children Earlene Heffner French (Ken), William (Bill) Jakob Heffner, Susan Heffner Butler (Billy), and Shonna Heffner, her grandchildren Donovan Heffner (Amanda), Joe Quick, Ryan Heffner (Daphne) Jamie Heffner-Perkins (Bobby), Jackie Heffner, Porshia Heffner (Mike), Aaron Heffner, Jessica Smith (Jay), Joshua Butler (Samantha), Brandy Carlise (Eric), MJ Pratt, and Mylonna Pratt, and  an abundance of great-grandchildren & great, great grandchildren.

Ms. Gwen was born on Trouble St., which was the same street the love of her life was living on when he was just four years old. Both families followed the Cotton Mill to McColl, SC, where they met as teens and fell in love.  At twelve years old, Gwen began working in a doctor’s office and diners to help her mother and brothers make ends meet. After putting aside an amount for savings each week, she would spend a budgeted amount on fabric to make a dress for the Friday night dance. Gwen found so much joy in dancing!  After years of courting, Jimmy and Gwen were married on August 6, 1954. They proceeded to have seven children of their own, and also adopted their great-granddaughter, Shonna, at three years of age.

Ms. Gwen was always a very hard worker!  She worked in textiles as a weaver until she retired. She was a notary public as well as a tax-preparer for Jackson-Hewitt, which she did privately from her home. She worked for the census bureau and was a volunteer with the Pee Dee Coalition. She loved her town of McColl and advocated for it well!

Gwen was the Matriarch of the family and was a wealth of wisdom!  She taught her family how to be strong, independent, and feisty as well as how to stand up for themselves.  She wasn’t big on simply saying “I love you” -- she always said, “Show your love with actions, not words”.

Gwen’s special quotes

“Don’t say I am sorry, ‘cause you did it, so you meant it!”

“You can’t trust anyone, not even yourself, unless you’re looking in the mirror.”

 “Don’t sweat the small stuff!”

“BUDGET, BUDGET, BUDGET!”

“Make your budget and stick to it!”

Gwen was a force of nature whose life impacted more people than we will ever know. Her influence will continue to impact generations to come through those she touched, and she will be missed forever.

A funeral service will be held at 4:00 P.M. on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at East Side Baptist Church with burial to follow at Rogers Cemetery.
