Philip Wayne Tompkins Obituary

Tompkins, Philip Wayne

On Saturday, May 18, 2024, at the age of 61, Phil passed away at Providence Care Hospital. He was surrounded by the warmth and love of his wife and best friend Julie (nee Greenham) and their sons Trevor (Sophie Dudley) and Nikk (Tayler Herrington), all of Kingston and all of whom he was very proud. His sisters, Heather Quance of Kingston and Kathryn Tompkins of Thornbury, loved and were well-loved by their big brother. Phil was a favourite brother in law of Michael Quance, Bryan Richardson, Dave Greenham and Kim Proctor, Rich and Stephanie Greenham, and Karen and Petr Komarek. His aunt Milree Latimer (Jerry Bass) of Bend, Oregon, his aunt and uncle Gerald and Joan Tompkins of Ottawa and his mother in-law Gillian Greenham of Ottawa remember him fondly. He had a special gift in his role as Uncle Phil to Tyler (Nicole Fyke) and Graham (Tori McEwan) Quance, Samantha Christensen (Dan, James and Ryan) and Stephen Greenham, Emmey and Charlotte Greenham, Theo Richardson and Ethan Komarek. Phil was predeceased by his dearly loved parents Wayne and Isabelle Tompkins, his uncle Douglas Latimer and his father in law, Michael Greenham.

Phil spent his entire 35+ year career as a gifted videographer and editor at Kingston’s CKWS Television. In both his professional and personal lives, his technical skills and creative eye, his commitment to supporting local businesses, his insight and kindness, and his deadpan sense of humour combined to leave a trail of fans and admirers in his wake.

The family will receive friends at the Wartman Funeral Home, Kingston on Thursday, May 23, 2024 from 6 - 8 pm and on Friday from 10-11 am. A memorial service will follow in the funeral home on Friday at 11 am. Reception will be held after the service in the Wartman Funeral Home Reception Centre, followed by interment at Newburgh Cemetery. Those unable to attend in person may watch the service by joining us on Zoom. Please register through the link on Phil's memorial page on the funeral home website under Service Details.

Throughout the past 10 months, Phil had the care and support of health care professionals and support teams in Kingston, Perth and at his home. Special thanks to Dr. Brooke Wilson of the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario, palliative nurse practitioner Margaret O'Neill, nurses Wendy Orr and Megan of Paramed, and the nurses, doctors and support staff of Perth & Smiths Falls District Hospital and Heritage 2 at Providence Care.

To honour Phil's life, donations to H'art Centre (providing access to arts, music, dance and theatre programs for adults with disabilities and those facing barriers) or to the Hospice Kingston Building Fund (for Kingston's first hospice residence, through University Hospitals Kingston Foundation) would be greatly appreciated by the family. Donations and condolences may be forwarded through wartmanfuneralhomes.com.
