Betty Lou Surber Obituary

Betty Lou Surber, age 96, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at Ft. Sanders Hospital.

She graduated from Anderson High School in 1945. She met her husband, who lived a couple houses down, when he got out of the service. They married on December 28, 1947, and settled in Union City Indiana where they raised their family. They moved to Knoxville in the early 1970s, followed by their children. In the mid 1980s, they moved to Florida.

Betty enjoyed playing cards, cruises and visiting friends and family. She was very active in her HOA community and their bus trips. She was a life member of BETA SIGMA PHI where she held many offices and enjoyed their annual conventions.

Betty is proceeded in death by the love of her life, Cort “Bill” Surber; parents, Rev. WM. O. Toombs and Rev. Mary Toombs; baby daughter, Linda Ellen Surber; sister, Jeanne Pruehsner; brother, WM. O. “Bill” Toombs; son-in-law, Jeff Huffman.

She is survived by her son, Michael (Betty) Surber; daughter, Brenda Huffman, who was her caregiver; “adopted” children, Jane Lewis and Ernie Murphy; grandchildren, Jeff (Robin) Surber, Stephanie Haga and Adrian (Brandy) Surber; great-grandchildren, Brittany (Chris) Kristle, Taylor Barnefske, Zac (Taylor) Haga, Meaghan Haga, Justin McGinnis, Jackson Surber and Jordan Surber; great-great-grandchildren, Gavin, Carly, Blakely, Tucker and Wrenley; sisters-in-law, Janet Shafer, Nancy Boggs, and many nieces and nephews. She dearly loved her family and friends.

The family will receive friends on Monday, May 20, 2024, from 5:00pm – 7:00pm with a service to follow at Gentry-Griffey Funeral Chapel and Crematory (5301 Fountain Rd, Knoxville, TN 37918)

Family and friends will meet the following day, Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at 1:00pm for a graveside service at The East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery located at 5901 Lyons View Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919.
