Evelyn Louise Pugh Obituary

Evelyn Louise Pugh (née Shaw), 83, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, after a routine medical procedure. Her eldest daughter was by her side just before her passing.

Evelyn was born at home in Springfield, Missouri on July 15, 1940. She grew up in a large family – one of eleven children and one of only two girls. She fondly remembered large fields, her grandmother’s flower garden, and attending a revival service in her teenage years where she chose to give her life to Jesus – a choice that would continue to sustain and shape the rest of her life. Evelyn graduated from Baptist Bible College in 1961 in the hopes of becoming an overseas missionary. This original intent evolved into a personal mission to serve and love the people in her life – which she did.

She raised seven children. They were her heart.

In her mid-thirties, Evelyn began working in a nursing home as a Certified Nursing Assistant. Later in her career, she transitioned to being an in-home caretaker. She had a keen sensitivity to the needs of those in her care and exhibited compassion and skill while meeting those needs.

Evelyn self-identified as a quiet person. She listened fully, laughed easily, and was always open to learning new things. Incredibly stubborn, she held fiercely to what she believed was right, standing up for herself and those she loved. One of her most treasured experiences was a mission trip to Albania with the women of Calvary Church. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, chili dogs, and red birds.

Throughout her life, she called many places home, including: Missouri, Connecticut, Michigan, Washington, California, and finally Lansing, Illinois. She was an active member of Trinity Church (Lansing, MI), Haslett Baptist Church (Haslett, MI), Calvary Church (Grand Rapids, MI), Northpointe Church (Dewitt, MI), and The Grove Church (Marysville, WA).

Evelyn will be deeply missed by her family. She is survived by her children: Deborah Albrecht (Daniel), Diana Reed, Belynda Johnson (Thomas), Robert Pugh, Dana Pickworth (Brad), Deron Pugh (Paula), and Lance Pugh (Sarah).

She heavily influenced the lives of her eighteen grandchildren: Christina Opperman (Scott), Danielle Albrecht (John), Caitlyn Young (Demetrius), Conor Reed, Sydney Ballans, Gabrielle Albrecht, Chelsea Davis (Ethan), Gilbert Palacios (Danielle), Rylee Dice (Robert), Victoria Dimick (Andrew), Mason Walker, Baylee Reed (Brian), Jessica Pugh, Aidan Albrecht, Randon Pugh, David Pugh, Paul Pugh, and Adeline Pugh.

Many of her twelve great-grandchildren also had the privilege of knowing her: Alyse Wolverton, Akhaos Hardwick, Natalee Opperman, Demetrius Young II, Harper Dice, Ezra Young, Milo Davis, Ivy Dice, Makhiavelli Eremo, Samira Young, Jona Davis, and Aria Eremo.

Her brothers: Michael (Linda), Donald (Becky), Ronald (Mary), and Curtis Shaw; and her half-siblings: Carl Shaw, Thomas Shaw, Jr., and Tammy Brannon, mourn her passing.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Margaret Shaw, and her siblings: Robert, Edward, Barbara, Harry, Thomas Wayne, and Harold Shaw.

We invite family, friends, and all who were touched by Evelyn’s gracious spirit to join us for a picnic in her honor. This gathering will be an opportunity for us to share memories, laughter, and maybe even a few tears as we pay tribute to her faithful life.
